Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Hatch End

Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. This is HMRC’s energy-saving materials relief, which applies to homes rather than businesses, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice. If the problem is deciding on the outdoor unit position and not knowing whether a grant applies, we can sort it out.

Homes in Hatch End are often flats and terraces, where outside space is limited, and that decides which kind of heat pump works. An air-to-water system needs space outside and typically a hot water cylinder inside, while an air-to-air system needs less space.

Aftercare is simple, and most of it is in the manual: clear space around the outdoor unit, the cleaning the manual describes and a service at the recommended interval. It also keeps you on the right side of any warranty terms that ask for servicing.

What owners can safely do

Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you can’t see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Hatch End

Will a heat pump in Hatch End need planning permission?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. The centre of Hatch End is in a conservation area. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask Harrow council, which is normally the planning authority for Hatch End.

Can I have air conditioning in a flat in Hatch End?

In many cases, yes, once the lease and the building’s rules are checked. Permitted development rules for flats are tighter than for houses, so we check the outdoor unit position and give you the details to send to the freeholder or managing agent.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

It can, for some brands. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we’ll explain them, and book the service at the interval they recommend.

Can I get a grant for an air-to-air heat pump?

The scheme offers £2,500 for air-to-air, but the conditions are strict. It will not apply if the system is an add-on next to a boiler, and it must cover the whole heating demand.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. We offer maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system and the manufacturer’s terms need. Each visit is written up and F-Gas records kept where they apply.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We will work out which band applies to yours.

Are you F-Gas certified?

We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We’re members of Checkatrade too.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. The work itself takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Photos of the room and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan most of a visit to Hatch End in advance.

  1. First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
  2. We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
  3. You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.

Before we arrive

  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
  • Mention any parking restrictions near the property

For landlords and property managers

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we will send a fixed-price quote.

Records are where property maintenance often slips. Each visit produces a dated record, with F-Gas records wherever refrigerant work is involved, so you can show what was done and when.

When to call us in Hatch End

Many people look at heat pumps when an oil, LPG or gas boiler is getting old. Starting early leaves time for the survey, the design and any grant application instead of making a rushed decision when the heating stops.

Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:

  • Not knowing whether a grant applies
  • Questions about listed buildings or conservation areas
  • Finding a place for the outdoor unit

Historic houses such as Headstone Manor, about 1 mile south-east, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.

What your quote should include

  • How extra work would be agreed if they find something unexpected
  • Who does the electrical work, and whether they can certify it
  • What paperwork you’ll receive afterwards
