Hadley questions
Is a heat pump in Hadley permitted development?
The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. Central Hadley is a short walk from the Monken Hadley Conservation Area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for Hadley, normally Barnet council) first.
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Hadley?
Hadley is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. The installer applies, and we are MCS certified.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns that can’t wait. Ring 07833 053749 any time and explain the problem.
Why does F-Gas certification matter?
For refrigerant work, both the engineer and the company need the right F-gas credentials. It’s worth checking before booking, and we’re happy to show ours.
Do I get paperwork after the visit?
Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: a dated note of the work, with refrigerant details where they apply.
Which accreditations do you hold?
We’re an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We are members of Checkatrade too.
Air source heat pumps in Hadley
Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than most boilers which means some radiators may need upsizing. We check each radiator against the room’s heat loss, and the quote sets it out. The work covers underfloor heating, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and hot water cylinders, and common reasons people get in touch are wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating and checking whether planning permission is needed.
Homes in Hadley are often flats and terraces, where outside space is limited, which affects which heat pump suits. An air-to-water system needs space outside and normally a hot water cylinder inside, while an air-to-air system needs less space.
Looking after a system is mostly common sense: clear space around the outdoor unit, the cleaning the manual describes and a service at the recommended interval. That also helps where the warranty terms ask for regular servicing.

How the job changes from property to property
Outdoor unit position and planning
Flats and blocks of flats have different limits, and Article 4 directions can remove rights. Listed buildings also need separate consent and we check what applies to you.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers grants towards heat pumps: £7,500 for air-to-water (and ground source), and £2,500 for air-to-air with strict conditions. The installer applies.
What owners can safely do
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.
Before you call us about a fault, a few checks can save a visit: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and ring us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk.
The process
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. The work itself takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Some blocks in Hadley need contractor details in advance, so tell us what your building needs.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
- A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
- We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
- We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.
How to prepare
- Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
- Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
- Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
How to get a quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Tell us the address and what you need, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.

Air source heat pumps around Hadley
Valuation Office Agency council tax records put about 42% of homes in Hadley and the neighbourhoods around it before 1919. Period properties can still suit a heat pump, but the design has to start from accurate heat loss figures. London homes can be short of space for an outdoor unit and cylinder, which affects the choice of heat pump.
Historic houses such as Wyllyotts Manor, about 2.8 miles north, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in. Older homes near Christ Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

Looking after your system
Aftercare is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you
- Store the MCS certificate and warranty documents together
- Check eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme early
Once commissioned, we register the installation with MCS and give you the certificate. Keep it with the manufacturer’s paperwork for future reference.
Keep insulation and draught-proofing in good order because it reduces the heat the system needs to supply.
What a customer said
“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
