Enfield Highway: your questions answered
Do I need permission to put air conditioning in my flat in Enfield Highway?
In many cases, yes, once the lease and the building’s rules are checked. We look at where the outdoor unit could go, such as a balcony, flat roof or rear wall, and write it up for the freeholder or agent.
Will a heat pump in Enfield Highway need planning permission?
It depends on the property. Central Enfield Highway sits inside a conservation area. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with Enfield council, which is typically the planning authority for Enfield Highway.
Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?
The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That is the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We’re happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.
How does the warranty work?
It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.
What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?
Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%. It does not apply to businesses, and this is general information rather than tax advice.
Can you set up regular servicing?
Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is written up, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.
Does servicing affect my warranty?
It depends on the manufacturer’s terms. Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of the warranty, so it’s worth checking. Either way, keep a record of every service.
How we handle air source heat pumps in Enfield Highway
An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler, so radiators may need to be larger to give out the same heat. We check each radiator against the room’s heat loss, and the quote sets it out. We’re often asked to deal with checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and finding a place for the outdoor unit, across air-to-air heat pumps, hot water cylinders and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas.
A terrace in Enfield Highway shares walls with its neighbours, which helps keep heat in, provided the outdoor unit can sit somewhere that passes the MCS noise check.
The records are your system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer, so keep it safe.

Owner checks or an engineer?
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are usually the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
What happens on the day
Our engineers bring the tools, gauges and access equipment the job needs. You only need to give us clear access to the units, or their planned positions, and to the fuse board. On site, the work takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Pictures of the space and the outside wall help us plan the work in Enfield Highway.
- First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
- We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
- You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
- We install the heat pump and connect it up.
- We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.
Before we arrive
- Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
- Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
- Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
We work for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as homeowners and businesses. Tell us who the contact on site is and who should receive the paperwork and we’ll copy in whoever needs it.
When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the agreement for who looks after the system. We’re happy to deal with either side and send the records to whoever needs them.
Signs you need air source heat pumps in Enfield Highway
An ageing boiler is often the moment people start thinking about a heat pump. Planning the change before the boiler fails gives you time to survey, design and apply for any grant, rather than rushing a replacement in winter.
If any of these sounds familiar, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Finding a place for the outdoor unit
- Choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air
- Planning and permitted development questions
If your home is listed, like Forty Hall about 1.3 miles north-west, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.

- What paperwork you will receive afterwards
- Whether extra work needs your approval first

What a heat pump looks like in Enfield Highway
VOA council tax data show about 55% of homes in the Enfield Highway area date from 1919 to 1939. For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. For a London home, the outdoor unit position and the MCS noise check need careful planning.
If you live near Brimsdown station, the survey compares air-to-water and air-to-air for your home before anything is quoted.
