Air source heat pumps across Devil's Den

Air source heat pumps in Devil's Den, done properly

We begin with a room-by-room heat loss survey. That tells us how much heat the home needs, room by room so the system is sized to match. Sizing by rule of thumb isn’t good enough. The work covers homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, air-to-air heat pumps and radiator systems, and common reasons people get in touch are checking emitters for a heat pump and checking eligibility for a heat pump grant.

For a home around Devil's Den that is off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.

Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details and F-Gas records for a new system, a note of the fault and the fix for a repair, or a service record. Keep it with the system’s paperwork, because it helps with any later warranty question.

Do you need air source heat pumps in Devil's Den?

Homes with electric heating sometimes look at heat pumps as an alternative. The survey tells you whether it’s practical and what’s involved along with whether any grant could apply.

What we are most often called about:

  • Plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump
  • Not knowing whether a grant applies
  • Radiators that may be too small for a heat pump

Every heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation.

How it works

Where something has to be switched off during the work, we agree it with you first so it doesn’t catch you out. For businesses, we can usually work room by room or zone by zone. On site, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to Devil's Den.

  1. Step one is understanding the house, how it’s heated today and what you’d like to change.
  2. The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.

Heat pumps in Devil's Den: local notes

The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures show about 31% of homes in the Devil's Den area were built in 2000 or later, and about 74% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Newer homes usually lose less heat, which tends to suit a heat pump well. Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

If your home is listed, like Stoneacre about 4 miles north, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.

Heat loss surveys

A heat loss survey measures how much heat each room loses on a cold day. Everything else is sized from it.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Eligibility depends on the property and the scheme rules, so we check before you commit.

Questions from Devil's Den

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Devil's Den?

Devil's Den is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. The installer applies, and we are MCS certified.

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Devil's Den?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The half-mile around the middle of Devil's Den holds about 7 listed buildings and structures. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where needed, we check with Maidstone council, which is typically the planning authority for Devil's Den.

How quickly will you reply?

We reply to enquiries the same working day. For a breakdown that can’t wait, call our 24/7 emergency line.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

Air-to-water heats radiators or underfloor heating and hot water; air-to-air heats rooms through indoor units and can cool them. With air-to-air, hot water needs another source and the survey helps decide.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

Expect it to take anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. How much of the heating changes decides most of the time and the timing is set out with your quote.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

Not the refrigerant work. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

From one of our customers

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
