Air source heat pumps in Challock

A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home with electricity running the compressor and fans. It works on the same principle as air conditioning, run the other way and the Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, radiator systems and hot water cylinders, and people most often call us about an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life and working out whether radiators need upsizing.

If your home in or near Challock is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.

Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details and F-Gas records for a new system, a note of the fault and the fix for a repair, or a service record. Keep it with the system’s paperwork so it’s to hand next time.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: check the mode, the set temperature, the remote’s batteries and the breaker. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and ring us on 07833 053749 or use the quote form.

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

When something else is needed

We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • Getting planning permission or listed building consent on your behalf
  • Disconnecting or servicing a gas boiler
  • Improving the building’s insulation

Not sure which it is? You can ring us on 07833 053749 or send an email and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

What we work on in Challock

  • Radiator systems
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Underfloor heating
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas

Looking after it afterwards

Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Clear leaves and debris from the outdoor unit
  • Don’t block radiators or indoor units with furniture
  • Diary the next service

If anything does not seem right after installation, phone 07833 053749 or send an email and we’ll talk it through. Annual servicing helps keep the system working well.

Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off as explained at handover.

Challock: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Challock?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Challock?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Central Challock sits inside a conservation area. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask Ashford council, which is typically the planning authority for Challock.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Should I choose air-to-water or air-to-air?

The right choice depends on the property and what you need. The grant is £7,500 for eligible air-to-water systems and £2,500 for air-to-air in limited cases. We explain the options after the survey.

What accreditations do you have?

We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We are also Checkatrade members.

Will I get records for the system?

Yes, on every job. New installations come with commissioning details, F-Gas records and warranty information, while repairs and services get a written note of what was found and done.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

That depends on the brand. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim and we’ll tell you what your brand asks for.

About 65% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

Period properties close to Church of St Cosmas and St Damian can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first. Historic houses such as Belmont House and Gardens, about 3.9 miles north, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.

How it works

If the system has to be off for part of the visit, we tell you before work begins so it does not catch you out. For businesses, we can usually work room by room or zone by zone. The work takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. For a village like Challock, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Keep pets and children away from the work area
  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
  • Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
