Air source heat pumps near Bramling

Air source heat pumps in Bramling

Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit cannot be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We check the rules for your property as part of the survey. If you are dealing with deciding on the outdoor unit position and checking whether planning permission is needed, we can help.

Older and listed homes in villages like Bramling need extra care, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.

Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

How the visit works

There’s very little for you to do on the day. Someone needs to let us in and show us the units, or where they’re going, and we take it from there. At the end, we tidy up and run through the work with you. Seeing the property in pictures first means the trip to Bramling can be planned properly.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.

Before we arrive

  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
  • Mention any parking restrictions near the property

Advice

What a heat pump looks like in Bramling

Valuation Office Agency council tax records show about 35% of homes in the Bramling area were built in 2000 or later, and about 65% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Newer homes typically lose less heat, which tends to suit a heat pump well. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder. The Bramling Conservation Area lies close to the centre of Bramling, within about a third of a mile. Draw a one-mile circle round the middle of Bramling and it takes in 3 conservation areas. On the National Heritage List, around 15 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Bramling; White Cottage (grade II) is one. That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where necessary, we check with Canterbury City council, typically the planning authority here.

Older homes near Church of St John may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. With Goodnestone Park about 2.1 miles south-east, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

Bramling is about 5 miles east of Canterbury, in Kent. Across the CT3 area, our engineers can take on air source heat pumps. Bramling is one of 922 places in Kent where we work for homes and businesses. Eastbourne, roughly 51 miles off, has its own page on this site.

What happens if it’s left?

The two types suit different homes and needs. Air-to-water heats radiators and hot water, and can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air heats and cools rooms, and only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions, and we explain which fits your home. A system that is left with a fault, or without a service, usually costs more to run.

No two properties are the same, so we price each one individually. The equipment, how we reach it, the route between units and the work needed all play a part.

Common questions in Bramling

Will you come out to Bramling?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Is the heat pump grant available in Bramling?

Bramling is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?

It varies from room to room. We check them all during the survey and the quote shows what’s needed.

Will you make a mess?

Protection goes down first: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards when we finish.

Is the equipment covered by a warranty?

The manufacturer’s warranty, on the manufacturer’s terms. Terms differ by brand, and we set them out on your quote.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we will agree what happens next.

Will I get records for the system?

Yes. It’s the record a manufacturer or the next engineer will ask to see: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.

How the job changes from property to property

VAT on heat pumps

Heat pumps in homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% after that following HMRC’s rules on energy-saving materials. It does not apply to businesses.

Air-to-air heat pumps

Since 2025, air-to-air heat pumps can also be permitted development in England, subject to the conditions. Cooling-only units are not included and need a check with the council.

Rented and managed buildings

Larger air conditioning systems in buildings need more than servicing: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We can arrange it, prepare the system for it and fix what it finds.

The F-gas rules share responsibility for leak checking between the equipment’s operator and the service technicians. Where a building is let or managed, the lease or contract should make clear who looks after the system, and we can work for either side.

A customer’s words

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
