Air source heat pumps in Blenheim

Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. Air-to-air systems do not heat hot water, so you’ll need another way to do that. We are often asked to deal with working out whether radiators need upsizing and plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump, across homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, underfloor heating and radiator systems.

For a home around Blenheim that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

What we do, step by step

Each visit follows the same order: check the plan with you, put the dust sheets down, carry out the job, test what we have done and talk you through it. On site, the work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to Blenheim.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

Advice

Owner checks or an engineer?

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are typically the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

What affects the quote in Blenheim

The quote reflects the job in front of us. We take into account:

  • The pipe route between the units
  • The electrical supply and whether a new circuit is needed
  • What state the existing equipment is in

The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before we start.

Helping us quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:

  • Your consumer unit or fuse board
  • The address and the type of property
  • The outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits or would go

To help us quote: the address and the type of property, photos of the rooms or units, the make and model of any existing system and anything you’ve noticed, such as an error code or a noise. Then ring 07833 053749 or drop us a line.

Homes in Blenheim and heat pumps

About 77% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St Mary, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen. Historic houses such as Garsington Manor, about 0.5 miles south, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.

Questions from Blenheim

Do you cover smaller places like Blenheim?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Can I fit a heat pump in Blenheim without planning permission?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. Central Blenheim is a short walk from the Garsington Conservation Area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for Blenheim, usually South Oxfordshire council) first.

What warranty do I get?

It’s the manufacturer’s, and the terms are theirs. Some brands make regular servicing a condition, so keep your service records.

What accreditations do you have?

As the law requires for refrigerant work, we’re an F-Gas certified company. NICEIC approval, MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership sit alongside it.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. For simple jobs, pictures and a few details can be enough, while larger systems and faults that need testing are seen on site.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That is a legal requirement, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We’re happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

From one of our customers

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
