Air source heat pumps in Battle

Air-to-water heat pumps heat your hot water through a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. Air-to-air systems don’t heat hot water, so you’ll need another way to do that. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, radiator systems and air-to-air heat pumps, and people most often call us about ageing boilers that will need replacing and radiators that may be too small for a heat pump.

Homes around Battle usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder, so heat loss, radiators and the electrics are what we check.

The records are your system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer, so keep it safe.

What happens on the day

Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. On the day, both are in the same hands. On site, it takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. A few pictures let us plan a visit to a place like Battle.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
  • Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need

Air source heat pumps in Battle: the local picture

About 70% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Historic houses such as Durhamford Manor, about 2.4 miles north-east, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.

Battle is about 5 miles north of Bexhill-on-Sea, in East Sussex. Whether you are in the middle of Battle or further out, we cover air source heat pumps, from a single room to a whole building. In East Sussex alone we list 289 places and Battle is among them. Eastbourne is in our area too, around 12 miles away.

A recent job of ours in Battle was on High Street (TN33): installing two Samsung wall-mounted units in the dining room and a single unit in the kitchen preparation area.

Getting to Battle is easy by the A271 and A2100. Streets in the area include High Street, Market Road and Station Road, each of them within reach. We also cover the places around Battle: Steven's Crouch (2 miles west), Netherfield (2 miles north-west), Mountfield (2 miles north), John's Cross (3 miles north) and Penhurst (3 miles west). Within a short drive, we also cover Eastbourne (12 miles south-west), Hastings (5 miles south-east), Bexhill-on-Sea (5 miles south) and Hailsham (11 miles west).

How the job changes from property to property

Radiators and underfloor heating

Underfloor heating suits a heat pump’s lower flow temperature and we look at it during the survey.

Outdoor unit position and planning

The outdoor unit needs a position with good airflow, a solid base and a sensible pipe route. Noise is part of the MCS 020(a) check, so we consider nearby homes too.

Battle questions

Is a heat pump in Battle permitted development?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. A conservation area takes in the middle of Battle. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the local planning authority (for Battle, normally Rother council).

Is the heat pump grant available in Battle?

Battle is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.

Will you make a mess?

We start with protection: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards when we finish.

What warranty do I get?

The manufacturer’s warranty, on the manufacturer’s terms. Terms differ by brand, and we set them out on your quote.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That is the law, not just our preference, and it also matters for the manufacturer’s warranty. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.

Can landlords and managing agents book you?

Yes. From a single let flat to offices, shops and public buildings, we work the same way: a look first, a fixed-price quote and written records.

Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?

That depends on the room’s heat loss and the radiator’s size. We check them all during the survey, so the quote covers any changes.

When to call us in Battle

Some homes heated by electric heaters or storage heaters consider a heat pump instead. A survey shows whether a heat pump suits the property and what would need to change, and we explain the grant position for your home.

The things we are asked about most are:

  • Moving away from fossil-fuel heating
  • Planning and permitted development questions
  • Not knowing whether a grant applies

Period properties close to The Parish Church of St Mary can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

Before booking anyone

  • What happens if the job turns out to be different on the day
  • Whether the quote shows VAT clearly
  • Whether the quote is a fixed price

Our hiring checklist

Why deal with it now?

From 1 April 2027, VAT on heat pumps in homes rises from 0% to 5%. If you are thinking about a heat pump, that date is worth knowing, though the right time also depends on your home and heating. A system that is left with a fault, or without a service, typically costs more to run.

One room or a whole building, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the equipment. You will have a fixed price before any work starts, and the quote sets out the VAT.
