Heat loss surveys

A heat loss survey measures how much heat each room loses on a cold day. It’s the basis for sizing the heat pump and the radiators.

About our air source heat pumps in Ascot

Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home, so an add-on next to a boiler is not eligible. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, air-to-air heat pumps and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, and the jobs we see most are working out where a cylinder could go and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life.

If your home in or near Ascot is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027.

Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we set them out on your quote. Terms differ from brand to brand, so we go through them with you rather than leave you to find the small print.

Why deal with it now?

The 0% VAT rate on heat pumps in homes runs until 31 March 2027, then 5% applies. If you’re thinking about a heat pump, that date is worth knowing alongside your own plans for the property. Dealing with it now is typically simpler than a breakdown later.

Putting several jobs into one visit often makes better use of the time. Mention every unit or room you need covered and we will price it together.

What a heat pump looks like in Ascot

About 63% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

Live in one of the older houses around Church of All Souls? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. If your home is near Ascot station and heated by a gas boiler, an air-to-water heat pump can replace it where the survey shows it suits.

Ascot questions

Can I fit a heat pump in Ascot without planning permission?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. The centre of Ascot is in a conservation area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at Windsor and Maidenhead council, usually the authority for Ascot first.

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Ascot?

Ascot is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Do you work on systems someone else installed?

Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

Air-to-water feeds your central heating and hot water, while air-to-air warms and cools rooms directly. With air-to-air, hot water needs another source and the survey helps decide.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

What does F-Gas certified mean?

F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. That is not optional: it’s required by law, and AirCon Doctor is certified.

What air conditioning won’t do

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what air source heat pumps won’t do:

  • A grant for a home that does not meet the scheme rules
  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Disconnecting or servicing a gas boiler

If you are not sure, just give us a ring on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer.

How the visit works

We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we let you know if plans need to move. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. From there, the work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Photos of the existing unit help with repairs and servicing in Ascot.

  1. First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
  2. We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
  3. You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
  4. We install the heat pump and connect it up.
  5. After commissioning, you get the MCS certificate and a handover.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about parking and loading
  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
  • Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in
