Air conditioning in RH7

How air conditioning works in RH7

Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit is notifiable unless a registered competent person does it, and our NICEIC approval means we install and certify it ourselves. Typical jobs include fans and portables that don’t keep up and bedrooms and offices that overheat in summer, on ducted systems, multi-split systems and ceiling cassettes.

Protection comes first: dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work and nothing is moved without asking you. Then the electrics are made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access, and we clear up before we go.

  1. First the diagnosis: a survey of the rooms, the walls, the outside and the electrics.
  2. Then the prescription: the right system and size for each room, on a fixed-price quote.
  3. Then the work: units up, pipes and drain run, and a new circuit where needed.
  4. Testing: the circuit is pressure tested and evacuated before the refrigerant is released.
  5. Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

Pricing in RH7

The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

Ask for a quote

VAT is set out clearly on every quote, with the rate that applies to your job. Homes, businesses and different kinds of work can be treated differently for VAT, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. To get one, ring us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.

Where we install in RH7

Across RH7, from Lingfield, Dormansland and Blindley Heath to the villages, homes range from older terraces and cottages to new estates and flats. We survey every property before we quote.

Enquiries from RH7 get a reply on the working day they arrive. For a breakdown, use the 24/7 line.

Lingfield: Living close to Church of St Peter and St Paul? Some older properties in parts like that are protected, and the survey finds out whether yours is. Plenty of people near Lingfield station split the week between the train and a spare room, and that spare room is often the first to get a unit.

Common problems we fix in RH7

Portable units are often where people start, and why they call us. Portables push their warm air out through a hose in the window, so the window can’t close properly and the noisy part of the unit is in the room. A fixed split system puts the compressor outside.

Common reasons people call us include:

  • Working from home in a room that gets too warm
  • A system on old refrigerant that is due for replacement
  • A room that is unbearable on warm days
  • A business premises that overheats in summer

What owners can safely do

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off and call 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk.

Do not move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

System by system

Offices, shops and commercial rooms

Systems over 12 kW of effective rated output bring extra duties for the building, such as a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We can arrange the inspection and get the system ready for it.

Electrical supply

Most systems need their own circuit from the consumer unit. We’re NICEIC approved, so we fit and certify the circuit ourselves, which takes care of the Part P notification.

Leave it or put it right?

There’s a tax point for homes: HMRC zero-rates the installation of energy-saving materials in homes until 31 March 2027, after which the rate becomes 5%. HMRC says most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps, but each case depends on the facts, so we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.

What your quote should include

  • Why the equipment they’re quoting suits the job
  • Whether testing, commissioning and paperwork are included
  • Whether the price is fixed or an estimate
  • How extra work would be agreed if they find something unexpected

Questions from RH7

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

Can you fit air conditioning in a leasehold flat?

In many cases, but permissions come first. Leaseholders normally need consent from the landlord or management company for an outdoor unit and holes through outside walls and the lease will say. Planning rules for flats are tighter too, and we flag anything that may need permission. This is general information, not legal advice.

Are you F-Gas certified?

We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We are members of Checkatrade too.

Can I do any of the installation myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. Photos often do the job for simple work, while bigger systems and repairs that need testing get a visit.

How do I know what size unit to get?

We size each room on the survey, from its size, glazing, orientation and use. Too small, and it runs flat out; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy and we explain the output we recommend.

Do I need planning permission?

Not necessarily. On a house, air-to-water heat pumps and, since 2025, air-to-air systems that heat as well as cool can be permitted development if they meet the conditions. Permission is more likely to come up for cooling-only units, listed buildings, flats and road-facing positions in conservation areas, and we tell you at the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.
