Air conditioning in PO8: how it works

Most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust recognises that air-to-air heat pumps often go by the name air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. Common call-outs are for a business premises that overheats in summer and a loft room or top floor that bakes in summer, across multi-split systems, ducted systems and wall-mounted split systems.

Our engineers arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. On site, it takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system.

  1. We start by looking at the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go.
  2. Each room is sized and you get a fixed-price quote setting out the equipment and the unit positions.
  3. Brackets go on, the units are hung and the refrigerant lines, cable and drain are routed between them.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. Last comes the run-up: every mode checked, the controls explained and the paperwork left with you.

Every quote starts with a look at the job, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from pictures and measurements. After that, we send a fixed price before any work starts.

Near you in Horndean

Typical jobs here are in properties near Red Lion Inn, Saint Wilfrid's and Horndean Infant School, among other places. The nearest railway station is Rowlands Castle station, about 2.6 miles south-east. Nearby you will also find Havant War Memorial Hospital (3.8 miles south) and Clanfield Earthwork (3 miles north-east). For a walk, there’s Windmill Hill and Southmoor Nature Reserve.

Where we install in PO8

In PO8, as across England, the same permitted development rules apply: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.

From London flats to coastal homes and country cottages, London and the South East have every kind of property. We are F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps.

Horndean: Warblington Castle (roughly 4.8 miles south-east) shows the area has its share of heritage. A listed home needs consent before an outdoor unit or pipework goes on. Living close to Saint Wilfrid's? Some older properties in parts like that are protected, and the survey finds out whether yours is.

Managing agents and facilities teams in PO8

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works and we will come back with a fixed-price quote.

Where a tenant occupies the property but the landlord owns the system, it’s worth checking the agreement for who looks after the system. We are happy to deal with either side, and the paperwork can go to both.

Signs you need air conditioning

Portable units are often where people start, and why they call us. A portable unit has to vent its warm air through a hose out of a window, which lets some heat back in, and its compressor sits in the room with you. With a split system, the compressor lives outside.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • A room that is unbearable on warm days
  • A business premises that overheats in summer
  • Uncertainty over the right type and size of system
  • Working from home in a room that gets too warm

What affects the cost of air conditioning

The price is fixed before any work begins. It takes into account:

  • What electrical work the job needs
  • What we find on the survey or diagnosis
  • Whether we need access equipment for high-level work
  • How many units are involved

What you pay depends on the system and the number of rooms or units, the access and what the work involves. You get a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.

Before you get in touch

Simple jobs can often be priced from photos and some basics. Useful things to send:

  • The fuse board and where it is in the property
  • Your installation or service records
  • Wide pictures of the room or the existing unit
  • Where the property is and what kind of building it is

Every quote shows the VAT clearly, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. VAT can differ between homes and businesses and between kinds of work, so we confirm it on the quote. To get one, phone 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk.

When something else is needed

To be straight with you, some problems need a different answer:

  • Heat loss through very poor insulation (a system will heat the room, but insulation is a separate job)
  • An installation that needs consent nobody has given yet
  • Problems with a gas boiler or the radiators

Questions from PO8

Can the outdoor unit go on a roof or at ground level?

We agree it with you on the survey. It must have clear airflow and space for servicing, and a position facing a road can bring extra planning considerations. We’ll tell you what to check before we fit it.

Do you work on all makes?

We install and work on the leading makes, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Tell us the make and model and we’ll take it from there.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.

Will I get records for the system?

Yes. Each visit is written up, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. Keep them with the manual and the warranty documents.

How do I know what size unit to get?

Sizing is done on the survey, room by room. An undersized unit never catches up, and an oversized one cycles and wastes energy, so we explain why we’ve chosen a particular output.

Does air conditioning need its own electrical supply?

Most of the time, yes: a dedicated circuit is needed. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and as NICEIC approved contractors we install and certify it as part of the job.
