How air conditioning works in MK18
We approach an installation much as a doctor approaches a patient: survey first, install second, commission and hand over last. At sign-off, the system is tested in each mode, the controls are explained and the F-Gas records are left with you. The work covers ducted systems, air-to-air heat pumps and ceiling cassettes, and common reasons people get in touch are fans and portables that don’t keep up and a room that’s unbearable on warm days.
Our engineers arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. The work itself takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.
- First the diagnosis: a survey of the rooms, the walls, the outside and the electrics.
- Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
- Then the work: units up, pipes and drain run, and a new circuit where necessary.
- Checks: a pressure test for leaks, then a vacuum to clear moisture.
- Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Buckingham: Homes near St Peter and St Paul are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it. Stowe House (roughly 2.8 miles north-west) shows the area has its share of heritage. A listed home needs consent before an outdoor unit or pipework goes on.
Leave it or put it right?
There’s a tax point for homes: installing energy-saving materials in residential accommodation is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%. HMRC says most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps, but each case depends on the facts and we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
Questions to ask before booking
- What records you get at the end
- Whether the quote shows VAT clearly
- Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it
- If the figure could change on the day
Keeping the system healthy
After the visit, a few habits help:
- Report drips, noises or error codes right away
- Keep the indoor unit’s filters clean
- Shut doors and windows when it’s on
- Keep the handover documents somewhere safe
If anything isn’t right after we have gone, call us on the same number. Tell us what the system is doing, and any code on the display and we’ll help you sort it out.
Give the outdoor unit room to breathe. Leaves, plants, bins and stored items around it restrict the airflow, which makes the whole system less efficient.
What we’re called out for in MK18
Rooms overheat mostly because of heat they gain during the day. Sun through large windows, roof lights and glazed doors is the biggest source in many rooms, and the heat lingers long after the sun has moved round.
Most people get in touch when they notice something like this:
- An old system that needs replacing
- An office, shop or restaurant that’s uncomfortable for staff and customers
- Old electric heaters you’d like to replace with something more efficient
- Fans and portables that don’t keep up
Before you call an engineer
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are typically the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.
FAQs for MK18
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns that can’t wait. Ring 07833 053749 any time and explain the problem.
How much is air conditioning for one room?
Single-room systems start from £1,200 + VAT and are typically up to £2,200 + VAT. That covers supply, installation, commissioning and the F-Gas paperwork and is fixed after a survey or from photos.
Will you work on another installer’s system?
Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own from all the leading brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.
How long does air conditioning installation take?
Most single-room systems take a day. Multi-split, ducted and cassette systems take longer and the quote says how long to expect.
What accreditations do you have?
As the law requires for refrigerant work, we’re an F-Gas certified company. NICEIC approval, MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership sit alongside it.
Is planning permission needed for the outdoor unit?
Not necessarily. On a house, air-to-water heat pumps and, since 2025, air-to-air systems that heat as well as cool can be permitted development if they meet the conditions. Cooling-only units, listed buildings, flats and road-facing spots in conservation areas are where it normally comes up and the survey picks it up. This is general information, not legal advice.
How does the warranty work?
Warranty comes from the manufacturer and depends on the brand and product. For example, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.
