Air source heat pumps near Waterhales

How we handle air source heat pumps in Waterhales

Air source heat pumps collect heat from outdoor air and bring it inside, using electricity to drive the process. It works on the same principle as air conditioning, run the other way, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. Common call-outs are for finding a place for the outdoor unit and planning and permitted development questions, on air-to-air heat pumps, air-to-water heat pumps and hot water cylinders.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Waterhales, so the design focuses on heat loss and radiators.

Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we set them out on your quote. Terms differ from brand to brand, so we go through them with you rather than leave you to find the small print.

What happens if it’s left?

Getting the sizing wrong causes problems that are hard to fix later. Doing the survey properly from the start avoids that. An early booking makes the visit to Waterhales easier to arrange.

Homes, offices, shops and public buildings are all priced the same way: what’s needed, how we reach it, the parts and the labour. Call for a fixed-price quote and we will explain each part.

Homes in Waterhales and heat pumps

About 62% of homes across Waterhales and its surrounding area date from 1945 to 1972, according to VOA council tax data, and Census 2021 figures found about 38% of households in terraced houses. Homes of that age often have cavity walls that may or may not be insulated, which the survey checks. Shared walls keep a terrace’s heat loss down, while gardens next door make the noise check on the outdoor unit important.

Hare Hall lies about 3.6 miles south. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions. Older homes near Church of St Thomas may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

Waterhales is about 3 miles north of Harold Wood, in Essex. We cover Waterhales for air source heat pumps and across the rest of Essex. Our list for Essex has 644 entries and Waterhales is among them. London, roughly 17 miles off, has its own page on this site.

Not far from Waterhales, a recent job of ours was on Greenwich High Road, Greenwich (SE10), about 14 miles south-west: installing a Mitsubishi Electric wall-mounted unit in the retail area and a second unit in the stockroom and office.

Postcode districts we cover here: CM14. Neighbouring places we cover include Navestock Common (1 mile south-west), Horseman Side (1 mile north-east), St Vincent's Hamlet (1 mile south-east), Navestock Heath (1 mile north) and Noak Hill (1 mile south-east). Further out, we also cover Chelmsford (13 miles north-east), Basildon (11 miles south-east), Harlow (10 miles north-west) and Brentwood (4 miles east).

What we do, step by step

Everything the job needs comes with us, from tools and test equipment to ladders and dust sheets. You only need to give us clear access to the units, or their planned positions, and to the fuse board. The visit takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Somewhere like Waterhales, it helps to know about lanes, gates and where to park.

  1. First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you are hoping for.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
  4. Fitting day: the outdoor unit is placed, the indoor side connected and the controls set up.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit

Getting a price

Published ranges are a starting point; the quote is built on your property, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. Once we’ve looked at the job, from pictures or on a survey, you get a fixed price. To get going, phone us on 07833 053749 or use the quote form.

Waterhales questions

Is a heat pump in Waterhales permitted development?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. The half-mile around the middle of Waterhales holds about 4 listed buildings and structures. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for Waterhales, typically Brentwood council) first.

Will you come out to Waterhales?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?

We find out during the survey. Rooms where the radiator is big enough stay as they are, and any that need upsizing are set out in the quote.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

Air-to-water installations cost £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. Air-to-air systems are priced after a survey, with the VAT confirmed on your quote.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We will work out which band applies to yours.

Do you look at the job first?

Yes. We always look before we price, on a survey, or from your pictures and details where the job is simple. Then you get a fixed-price quote.

After we’ve gone

Looking after the system is mostly common sense. Our tips:

  • Find out the grant position at the survey
  • Store the MCS certificate and warranty documents together
  • Let the heat pump run steadily, as set up at handover

We show you how to use the controls and explain how a heat pump works differently from a boiler. Steady running suits a heat pump better than switching on and off so we set the controls up with you.

Do not cover radiators with furniture or heavy curtains so the heat can get into the room.

Before you call an engineer

Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you can’t see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.

Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.

A customer’s words

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
