What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Write down what you notice: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo of the display helps even more.

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Air source heat pumps in Upham

We begin with a room-by-room heat loss survey. That tells us how much heat the home needs, room by room so the system is sized to match. Guesswork leads to systems that are too big or too small. Common call-outs are for moving away from fossil-fuel heating and planning and permitted development questions, across air-to-water heat pumps, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-air heat pumps.

Older and listed homes in villages like Upham need extra care, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.

If a fault appears while the equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty, tell us the make, model and installation date. We’ll tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before anything chargeable is done.

Common questions in Upham

Is the heat pump grant available in Upham?

Upham is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and is not an add-on to a boiler. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Upham?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The centre of Upham is in the Upham Conservation Area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for Upham, typically Winchester City council) first.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. For simple jobs, photos and a few details can be enough, while bigger systems and repairs that need testing get a visit.

How much time does a heat pump install need?

An installation takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We confirm the timing after the survey, so phone us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line to arrange one.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

Air-to-water replaces the boiler for heating and hot water, while air-to-air heats and cools rooms, and we help you choose. Both are part of what we install.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

For some brands, yes. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we will explain them, and book the service at the interval they recommend.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

What happens if it’s left?

The extra £1,500 for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas is available until March 2027. If that applies to you, it’s worth asking about sooner rather than later. Getting the date in early helps for a place like Upham.

Homes, offices, shops and public buildings are all priced the same way: what’s needed, how we reach it, the parts and the labour. Ask for a fixed-price quote and we’ll go through it with you.

What the work involves, system by system

Outdoor unit position and planning

Flats have tighter limits, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights. Listed buildings also need separate consent, and we check the position for your property.

Air-to-water heat pumps

The price for air-to-water is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. A £7,500 grant may be available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for eligible homes and the installer applies.

Homes in Upham and heat pumps

The 2021 Census found about 66% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St Mary, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

What we do, step by step

There’s very little for you to do on the day. Someone needs to let us in and show us the units, or where they’re going, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and we explain what we’ve done. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to Upham.

  1. We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
  2. A heat loss survey is carried out, room by room.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. We install, commission and register the system under MCS.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
