Air source heat pumps in Thedden

What happens on the day

The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we let you know if plans need to move. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the photos you sent. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. From there, the work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. For a place like Thedden, the timing is set with you and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area

Advice

How we handle air source heat pumps in Thedden

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than most boilers, so radiators may need to be larger to give out the same heat. The survey shows which rooms are fine and which need changes, and the quote sets it out. If the problem is not knowing whether a grant applies and a boiler that’s getting old, we can help.

In a place like Thedden, some homes are listed, and permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings, so consent comes first.

Warranty periods vary by brand and by product. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, with longer extensions only on its air-to-water heat pumps. Whatever the brand, the manufacturer’s terms are explained on your quote.

Different systems, different jobs

Air-to-air heat pumps

The £2,500 grant for air-to-air applies only when the system replaces the fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s demand. It must be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.

Air-to-water heat pumps

Air-to-water systems work at lower temperatures than boilers, which is why radiator sizing is part of the survey.

Questions from Thedden

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Thedden?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Thedden, if they qualify. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. The installer applies, and we are MCS certified.

Will you come out to Thedden?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

For some brands, yes. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we’ll explain them and stick to the interval they set.

Do you protect the property while you work?

We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and we tidy up as we go. Before we leave, we clear up and run through the work with you.

Will I need planning consent for an air source heat pump?

Many installations on houses in England fall under permitted development, subject to the rules. Listed buildings are excluded, and listed building consent is separate, so we check for your property.

Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?

It depends on each radiator and the room it heats. At the lower temperatures a heat pump uses, radiators need more surface, and the survey checks each one.

Which manufacturers do you install and repair?

Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and tell you why.

Owner checks or an engineer?

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

Honest limits

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
  • Improving the building’s insulation
  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

Not sure which it is? You can call 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form and we will tell you honestly.

Homes in Thedden and heat pumps

About 47 miles out from central London, Thedden is part of the South East area we work across. The 2021 Census found about 61% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

If your home is listed, like Bentworth Hall about 1 mile west, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work. If your home is one of the older properties near St Peter's, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.
