The 2021 Census found about 71% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

Homeowners near Wateringbury station often ask whether a heat pump can take over from the boiler, and the heat loss survey answers that. Older homes near Church of St Peter and St Paul may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

Air source heat pumps in Teston

A £2,500 grant is available for some air-to-air heat pumps, with conditions. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, cover the whole heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer and be in a home, so an add-on next to a boiler is not eligible. If you are dealing with questions about listed buildings or conservation areas and finding a place for the outdoor unit, we can help.

For a home around Teston that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.

Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: what was done, the refrigerant type and any amount added or recovered. File them with the system’s paperwork, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Leave it or put it right?

The extra £1,500 for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas is available until March 2027. If that applies to you, it’s worth asking about sooner rather than later. Waiting rarely makes an air conditioning problem smaller.

Homes, offices, shops and public buildings are all priced the same way: the equipment, the access, the work involved and the time it takes. Call for a fixed-price quote and we will explain each part.

How the job changes from property to property

Air-to-air heat pumps

Since 2025, air-to-air heat pumps can also be permitted development in England, subject to the conditions. A unit used solely for cooling isn’t covered, so check with the council.

Outdoor unit position and planning

Permitted development conditions in England include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and must meet MCS 020(a) and not be used solely for cooling. It cannot be within the curtilage of a listed building.

How it works

The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the photos you sent. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. From there, the work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Work in Teston is booked in advance at a time that suits you.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you are eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
  5. The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.

How to prepare

  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit

Advice

FAQs for Teston

Is Teston within the area you cover?

Yes. Teston is within the area we cover across London and the South East. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Will a heat pump in Teston need planning permission?

It depends on the property. Central Teston is a short walk from the Teston Conservation Area. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t face a road. Where needed, we check with the planning department at Maidstone council, normally the authority for Teston.

How much VAT is charged on a heat pump in a home?

Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%. It doesn’t apply to businesses. This is general information, not tax advice.

Do you work on systems someone else installed?

Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

The right choice depends on the property and what you need. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions. We explain the options after the survey.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

Air-to-water work is in the £8,000–£16,000 range (0% VAT on homes), with any grant still to come off. The heat pump size, radiator changes and the cylinder decide where in that range you are. Air-to-air is priced after a survey.

Am I eligible for a heat pump grant?

Eligibility depends on the property and the scheme rules. The scheme gives £7,500 for eligible air-to-water or ground source systems, and £2,500 for air-to-air only under strict conditions. We check before you commit.

Before you call an engineer

Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are usually the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

From one of our customers

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
