About our air source heat pumps in Swift's Green
An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler, so radiators may need to be larger to give out the same heat. We check each radiator against the room’s heat loss and anything that needs changing is in the quote. The work covers homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, air-to-water heat pumps and air-to-air heat pumps, and the jobs we see most are questions about where the outdoor unit can go and working out whether radiators need upsizing.
Older and listed homes in villages like Swift's Green need extra care, and permitted development does not cover listed buildings, so consent comes first.
Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we explain those terms on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, and we’re happy to talk you through them.

Before you call an engineer
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrics need care too. Ask us to quote for a move instead.
The process
We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we let you know if plans need to move. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the pictures you sent. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. After that, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Visits to Swift's Green are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
- It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
- On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
- The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.
Getting ready for the visit
- Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
- Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
- Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it

Homes in Swift's Green and heat pumps
About 32% of homes in the Swift's Green area have been built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and the last census (2021) found about 74% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Lower heat loss in recent homes often means a smaller heat pump and fewer radiator changes. Houses normally have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
The installer applies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and we are MCS certified. Every heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation.

What air source heat pumps can’t fix
To be straight with you, some problems need a different answer:
- A grant for a home that does not meet the scheme rules
- Planning decisions, which rest with the council
- Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

Swift's Green questions
Is Swift's Green within the area you cover?
Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Send a few details and photos, and we reply the same working day.
Is a heat pump in Swift's Green permitted development?
It depends on the property. Central Swift's Green sits inside a conservation area. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask Ashford council, which is usually the planning authority for Swift's Green.
How much does an air source heat pump cost?
Air-to-water installations cost £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. Air-to-air systems are priced after a survey, with the VAT confirmed on your quote.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
Expect it to take from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. The cylinder, the radiators and the pipework make the biggest difference, and we confirm the timing with your quote.
Do you protect the property while you work?
We start with protection: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards when we finish.
How soon will you get back to me?
On the same working day you contact us. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
From one of our customers
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
