How we handle air source heat pumps in Sun Rising
For an air-to-water heat pump, the price is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a £7,500 grant towards an eligible air-to-water installation and the installer makes the application. Eligibility depends on the property, so we confirm it before anything is agreed. The work covers underfloor heating, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-water heat pumps, and common reasons people get in touch are replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump and ageing boilers that will need replacing.
For a home around Sun Rising that is off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.
AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

Sun Rising questions
Will a heat pump in Sun Rising need planning permission?
The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. The centre of Sun Rising is in a conservation area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at Cherwell council, normally the authority for Sun Rising first.
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Sun Rising?
Sun Rising is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and is not an add-on to a boiler. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Which type of heat pump is right for my home?
The right choice depends on the property and what you need. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions, and we set out the options after the survey.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?
Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.
Will my radiators work with a heat pump?
The heat loss survey answers that, room by room. Rooms where the radiator is big enough stay as they are, and any that need upsizing are set out in the quote.
How long will it take to install a heat pump?
As a guide, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. The programme is planned to keep time without heating short and agreed before work begins.
Why it’s worth doing now in Sun Rising
If the emitters can’t give out enough heat, some rooms won’t get warm enough. The survey picks this up before installation. An early booking makes the visit to Sun Rising easier to arrange.
The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Homes in Sun Rising and heat pumps
About 73% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.
Upton House, roughly 0.5 miles east, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings. Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler.

How the visit works
We keep the work area tidy as we go, with sheets down and mess cleared as we go. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. The visit takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. We agree a date with you and plan the visit to Sun Rising so we arrive with what’s needed.
- It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
- The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
- We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.
Getting ready for the visit

Looking after it afterwards
To keep the system working properly:
- Leave indoor units unobstructed
- Seal draughts where you can
- Find out the grant position at the survey
In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. It may give off steam or sound different for a few minutes, and that’s normal.
Don’t cover radiators with furniture or heavy curtains so the heat can get into the room.
Different systems, different jobs
VAT on heat pumps
Heat pumps in homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% after that, under HMRC Notice 708/6. It doesn’t apply to businesses.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Not every home qualifies and we confirm it before anything is agreed.
From one of our customers
“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
