Air source heat pumps in Steep

Common questions in Steep

Is the heat pump grant available in Steep?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Steep, if they qualify. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. The installer applies, and we are MCS certified.

Will you come out to Steep?

Yes. Steep is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Send a few details and photos, and we reply the same working day.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. Photos often do the job for simple work, while larger systems and faults that need testing are seen on site.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine from all the leading brands. Tell us the make and model and send any paperwork you have.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

Air-to-water work is in the £8,000–£16,000 range (0% VAT on homes), with any grant still to come off. The heat pump size, radiator changes and the cylinder decide where in that range you are. Air-to-air is priced after a survey.

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump?

It depends on the property and where the unit goes. Flats have tighter limits, conservation areas add conditions, and Article 4 directions can remove rights and we look at it during the survey.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

Air-to-water heats radiators or underfloor heating and hot water; air-to-air heats rooms through indoor units and can cool them. Air-to-air doesn’t heat hot water, and we explain which suits your home.

About our air source heat pumps in Steep

As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in Steep and the rest of Hampshire. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We help you work out which suits your home. Common call-outs are for plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and checking emitters for a heat pump, on air-to-water heat pumps, air-to-air heat pumps and underfloor heating.

Older and listed homes in villages like Steep need extra care, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.

Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: what was done, the refrigerant type and any amount added or recovered. File them with the system’s paperwork, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

What the work involves, system by system

Radiators and underfloor heating

At lower water temperatures, radiators give out less heat, and the survey checks each one.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

Before you call us about a fault, a few checks can save a visit: check the mode, the set temperature, the remote’s batteries and the breaker. If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off and phone 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.

Keeping the system healthy

Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Know the servicing conditions in your warranty
  • Check eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme early
  • Clear leaves and debris from the outdoor unit

Should you have questions after the install, phone us on 07833 053749 and we’ll talk it through. A yearly service is a good habit.

A well-insulated home helps a heat pump because it reduces the heat the system needs to supply.

What a heat pump looks like in Steep

About 74% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Detached and semi-detached houses normally have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder. Church of All Saints, listed at grade II*, is one of roughly 15 protected buildings and structures in the half-mile around Steep’s centre. For a heat pump, permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with East Hampshire council, normally the planning authority here where necessary.

Every heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation. Period properties close to Church of All Saints can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

What happens on the day

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. On site, it takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. For a place like Steep, the timing is set with you and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
  3. A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.
