Air source heat pumps for Shere

How we handle air source heat pumps in Shere

Air-to-water heat pumps heat your hot water through a cylinder. Homes with a combi boiler may not have a cylinder, so finding space for one is part of the survey. Air-to-air systems don’t heat hot water, so you’ll need another way to do that. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, radiator systems and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, and people most often call us about checking whether planning permission is needed and not knowing whether a grant applies.

For a home around Shere that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.

Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: what was done, the refrigerant type and any amount added or recovered. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Owner checks or an engineer?

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

The process

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. If a lane or gateway near Shere is tight for a van, let us know and we will plan for it.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

How to prepare

  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit

Aftercare tips

To keep the system working properly:

  • Ask about the grant before you commit
  • Clear leaves and debris from the outdoor unit
  • Read the manufacturer’s warranty terms for your brand

We show you how to use the controls and explain how a heat pump works differently from a boiler. Heat pumps tend to work best running steadily rather than in short bursts, and we will explain the settings for your home.

Keep radiators and indoor units unobstructed, as the system relies on them giving out heat.

What a heat pump looks like in Shere

The centre of Shere lies within the Shere Conservation Area. The Church of St James, listed at grade I, is one of roughly 50 protected buildings and structures in the half-mile around Shere’s centre. For a heat pump, permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with the local planning authority (normally Guildford council) where needed. About 38% of homes across Shere and its surrounding area were built before 1919, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures, and about 80% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Period properties can still suit a heat pump, but the design has to start from accurate heat loss figures. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Live in one of the older houses around The Church of St James? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. If your home is listed, like Hatchlands Park about 2.6 miles north, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.

What affects the cost of air source heat pumps

The diagnosis comes before the price. We look at:

  • The equipment or parts the job needs
  • Whether we need access equipment for high-level work
  • What kind of system it is

Homes, offices, shops and public buildings are all priced the same way: the equipment, the access, the work involved and the time it takes. Ask for a fixed-price quote and we’ll go through it with you.

Helping us quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:

  • The fuse board and where it is in the property
  • The postcode and whether it’s a home, flat or business
  • Your installation or service records

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Add the address and what you’d like done, and many jobs can be priced from that.

Shere: your questions answered

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Shere?

Shere is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Is Shere within the area you cover?

Yes. Shere is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. We always look before we price, either on a site survey or from pictures and details for simple jobs. Then you get a fixed-price quote.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

How much time does a heat pump install need?

It takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. How much of the heating changes decides most of the time, and we confirm the timing with your quote.

Why use an F-Gas certified company?

The law says any company working on equipment containing F gas has to be certified, and the engineers need their own qualifications. It’s how you know the refrigerant is being handled legally and safely.

Will my radiators work with a heat pump?

Some radiators may be fine as they are, and some may need to be larger. At the lower temperatures a heat pump uses, radiators need more surface so we check every radiator against the room’s heat loss.

From one of our customers

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
