Air source heat pumps in Salford, done properly
In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit cannot be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. If you are dealing with deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life, we can help.
If your home in or near Salford is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.
Warranty on the equipment is the manufacturer’s own, on the manufacturer’s terms, and we set them out on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, and we’re happy to talk you through them.

What happens on the day
Where something has to be switched off during the work, we agree it with you first so it does not catch you out. In a business, work can often be done one area at a time. On site, it takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. A note on how to find the property and where to park makes a visit to Salford easier.
- First we talk through the property and the current system.
- We measure heat loss for every room.
- The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
- A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
- Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.
Before we arrive
- Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go
- Clear access to the fuse board
- Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
Getting a quote
Every quote shows the VAT clearly, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. VAT can differ between homes and businesses and between kinds of work, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. For a fixed-price quote, call us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line.

When to call us in Salford
Homes with electric heating sometimes look at heat pumps as an alternative. A survey shows whether a heat pump suits the property and what would need to change, and we explain the grant position for your home.
Most people get in touch when they notice one of these:
- Checking eligibility for a heat pump grant
- Moving away from fossil-fuel heating
- Planning and permitted development questions
Period properties close to Church of St Mary can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether the quote shows VAT clearly
- Whether the quote is a fixed price
- Whether they hold F-Gas company certification, not just individual qualifications
Salford questions
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Salford?
Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Salford is in England, where it applies. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Can I fit a heat pump in Salford without planning permission?
The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. Around 6 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central Salford. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at West Oxfordshire council, usually the authority for Salford first.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
Do you work on systems someone else installed?
Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own, on all the main brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.
What accreditations do you have?
We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We are also Checkatrade members.
Will my radiators work with a heat pump?
Some radiators may be fine as they are, and some may need to be larger. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators give out less heat so we check every radiator against the room’s heat loss.
Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?
It depends on the manufacturer’s terms. Some warranty terms require the system to be serviced regularly by a qualified engineer, so it’s worth checking. Either way, keep a record of every service.

When something else is needed
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what air source heat pumps will not do:
- Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
- Insulation work, such as loft or cavity wall insulation
- Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
If you’re not sure, just give us a ring on 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer.
What the work covers
- Underfloor heating
- Air-to-water heat pumps
- Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
- Radiator systems
- Air-to-air heat pumps
- Hot water cylinders
Safe owner checks
Do not move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrics need care too. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.
Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.
From one of our customers
“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
