Air source heat pumps in Runwell, done properly
Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler does not qualify. If you are dealing with wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating and no space for a hot water cylinder, we can help.
If your home near Runwell has no mains gas, the grant can be bigger. Until March 2027, homes on oil or LPG without mains gas can get an extra £1,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
If a fault appears while the equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty, tell us the make, model and installation date. We will explain how the manufacturer’s terms are likely to apply before anything chargeable is done.

Heat pumps in Runwell: local notes
About 46% of homes across Runwell and its surrounding area date from 1945 to 1972, according to VOA council tax data, and about 70% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Whether the walls and loft have been insulated makes a real difference to the heat pump size for homes of that period. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
If you live near Wickford station, the survey compares air-to-water and air-to-air for your home before anything is quoted. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St Mary, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

Owner checks or an engineer?
Some faults have simple causes you can check first: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and give us a ring on 07833 053749 or drop us a line.
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
Common questions in Runwell
Is the heat pump grant available in Runwell?
Runwell is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.
Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Runwell?
It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. The half-mile around the middle of Runwell holds about 5 listed buildings and structures. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with Basildon council, which is normally the planning authority for Runwell first.
How does the warranty work?
It’s the manufacturer’s, and the terms are theirs. Some terms depend on regular servicing by a qualified engineer so it’s worth keeping the service records.
How do you keep the place clean during the work?
We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and we tidy up as we go. Before we leave, we clear up and run through the work with you.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we will suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.
What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?
Air-to-water heats radiators or underfloor heating and hot water; air-to-air heats rooms through indoor units and can cool them. Air-to-air doesn’t heat hot water and the survey helps decide.
Do you provide F-Gas records?
Yes, always. New installations come with commissioning details, F-Gas records and warranty information, while repairs and services get a written note of what was found and done.
Keeping the system healthy
Systems last better with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Store the MCS certificate and warranty documents together
- Check eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme early
- Diary the next service
We show you how to use the controls and explain how a heat pump works differently from a boiler. Steady running suits a heat pump better than switching on and off so we set the controls up with you.
A well-insulated home helps a heat pump, as lower heat loss means the system has less to do.
How it works
Protection comes first: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby and nothing is moved without asking you. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. The work on site takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes, and we tidy up before we leave. We plan the visit to Runwell from the survey or your pictures.
- It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
- Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
- We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
- Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
- Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.
Getting ready for the visit
- Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in
- Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
- Mention any parking restrictions near the property
