Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Penn

Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit cannot be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. If the problem is working out whether radiators need upsizing and moving away from fossil-fuel heating, we can sort it out.

If your home in or near Penn is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump.

We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

When something else is needed

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what air source heat pumps won’t do:

  • Insulation work, such as loft or cavity wall insulation
  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
  • Tax advice on your own circumstances

Not sure which it is? You can ring 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we’ll tell you honestly.

Where we work

  • Radiator systems
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Underfloor heating
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas

The process

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. The visit takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. A note on how to find the property and where to park makes a visit to Penn easier.

  1. First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
  2. The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
  3. You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
  4. Installation follows on the agreed dates.
  5. After commissioning, you get the MCS certificate and a handover.

Advice

Penn: your questions answered

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Penn?

Penn is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Is Penn within the area you cover?

Yes. Penn is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

Which type of heat pump is right for my home?

Air-to-water suits homes with radiators and a cylinder; air-to-air suits rooms that need heating and cooling, and we help you choose. We install both types.

What does an air-to-water heat pump cost?

£8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) for air-to-water, before the grant. The final price depends on the heat loss survey, the radiators and the cylinder and the quote is fixed.

Do you provide F-Gas records?

Yes. You get a written record of each visit, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. File them with the system’s paperwork.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?

We find out during the survey. Where a radiator is already large enough, it stays, and any that need upsizing are set out in the quote.

When will I hear back?

The same working day. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Before you call an engineer

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Before you call us about a fault, a few checks can save a visit: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and call us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk.

What a heat pump looks like in Penn

About 75% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder. Roughly a third of a mile or less from central Penn, you reach the Penn and Tylers Green Conservation Area. Historic England lists about 30 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Penn, including Dell Cottage (grade II). For a heat pump, permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with the planning team at Buckinghamshire council, which typically handles Penn where needed.

Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Margaret? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. Hughenden Manor lies about 2.9 miles north-west. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.

Penn is about 2 miles east of High Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire. Our engineers cover Penn for air source heat pumps and across the rest of Buckinghamshire. Penn is one of 263 places in Buckinghamshire where we work for homes and businesses. London is in our area too, around 27 miles away.

We work across HP10 for air source heat pumps. Whether you’re on Church Road, Glebelands and Carter Walk or anywhere close by, we can help. Close by, we work in Beacon Hill (1 mile south-east), Loudwater (2 miles south), Forty Green (2 miles south-east), Knotty Green (2 miles south-east) and Winchmore Hill (2 miles north-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Aylesbury (14 miles north), Chesham (6 miles north-east), Marlow (5 miles south-west) and Amersham (5 miles north-east).

What’s near Penn

Typical jobs here are in properties near The Queens Head Public House and Sir William Ramsay School. The nearest railway station is High Wycombe station, roughly 2.1 miles west of the centre. Well-known places in the area include Eden (2.6 miles west) and High Wycombe Castle (2.3 miles west). The countryside around Penn includes Gomm's Wood.

Looking after your system

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often
  • Do not block radiators or indoor units with furniture
  • Keep to regular servicing

The warranty on the heat pump is the manufacturer’s, on its own terms. We explain the terms for your brand, including any servicing conditions.

A well-insulated home helps a heat pump, as lower heat loss means the system has less to do.

What a customer said

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
