Air source heat pumps near Osidge

What a heat pump looks like in Osidge

About 52% of homes in Osidge and the neighbourhoods around it were built between the wars, according to VOA council tax data. Whether the walls and loft have been insulated makes a real difference to the heat pump size for homes of that period. In London, outside space and the rules for flats often decide which kind of heat pump suits.

Older homes near St Andrew's Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. If your home is listed, like Bruce Castle about 3.8 miles south-east, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.

Osidge is about 2 miles south-east of Barnet, in Greater London. Our engineers cover Osidge for air source heat pumps and across the rest of Greater London. Air source heat pumps in Osidge, done properly

As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in Osidge and the rest of Greater London. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We’ll explain which type fits your home and why. Common call-outs are for working out where a cylinder could go and working out whether radiators need upsizing, on underfloor heating, air-to-water heat pumps and hot water cylinders.

A terrace in Osidge shares walls with its neighbours, which helps keep heat in, provided the outdoor unit can sit somewhere that passes the MCS noise check.

Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details for an installation, a fault and repair note for a repair, or a record of the service. File it with the manual so it’s to hand next time.

Before you call an engineer

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

How it works

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. The visit takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Parking bays, permits and roof or balcony access are the first things we ask about in Osidge.

  1. We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
  4. Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

How to prepare

  • Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
  • Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in

How to get a quote

Every quote starts with a look at the job, either on a site survey or, for simple jobs, from your photos and details. After that, we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.

Advice

How we price air source heat pumps

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • The number of rooms, units or zones
  • One-off work versus a regular service cycle
  • The brand, model and parts involved

The cost depends on the type of system and how many units are involved, how easy the units are to reach and the parts and time the job needs. You get a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

Before you get in touch

To help us quote quickly, please include:

  • Any previous service or F-Gas records
  • Where the property is and what kind of building it is
  • Your consumer unit or fuse board

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Common questions in Osidge

Do I need permission to put air conditioning in my flat in Osidge?

Often, yes, but the lease and the freeholder typically have a say. We look at where the outdoor unit could go, such as a balcony, flat roof or rear wall, and write it up for the freeholder or agent.

Can I fit a heat pump in Osidge without planning permission?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. The half-mile around the middle of Osidge holds about 3 listed buildings and structures. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where necessary, we check with the local planning authority (for Osidge, usually Enfield council).

Is Osidge in your area?

Yes. Osidge is part of the area we cover, within the South East and London area we cover. Our base is in East Grinstead, West Sussex.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we’ll propose a schedule and quote for it. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?

It varies from room to room. The survey compares each radiator with the room’s needs, so the quote covers any changes.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That’s the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the job needs and how to do it and the fixed price is built on it.

When something else is needed

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Any gas work on the existing boiler
  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Promising eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

If you’re not sure, just call us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we’ll give you a straight answer.

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
