Keeping the system healthy
Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. A few tips:
- Look at insulation alongside the heat pump
- File the MCS certificate safely
- Find out the grant position at the survey
After commissioning, the installation is registered under MCS and you receive the certificate. File it with the warranty documents, as you may need it later.
Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and stored items. It needs good airflow to collect heat from outside, so keep it clear all year.
About our air source heat pumps in New England
Air source heat pumps collect heat from outdoor air and bring it inside, using electricity to drive the process. The technology is close to air conditioning, which is why we install both, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. If you’re dealing with finding a place for the outdoor unit and wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating, we can sort it out.
For a home around New England that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.
We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

How it works
If the system has to be off for part of the visit, we tell you before any work starts so it doesn’t catch you out. In a business, work can often be done one area at a time. The work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Visits to New England are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
- First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
- We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
- You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
- We install the heat pump and connect it up.
- We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.
How to prepare
- Let us know where the consumer unit is
- Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
- Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow

Questions from New England
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in New England?
Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: New England is in England, where it applies. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in New England?
It depends on the property. The half-mile around the middle of New England holds about 9 listed buildings and structures. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with Braintree council, which is normally the planning authority for New England.
Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?
We find out during the survey. Rooms where the radiator is big enough stay as they are and any changes are in the quote.
Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?
Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.
Which accreditations do you hold?
We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We are members of Checkatrade too.
Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?
No, not the refrigerant side. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.
Why does F-Gas certification matter?
Companies working on equipment that contains F gas must be certified by an approved body, and each engineer needs the right qualifications too. It means the refrigerant in your system is handled legally.

Heat pumps in New England: local notes
Census 2021 figures found about 86% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
Every heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St Leonard, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.
