Air source heat pumps in Marden Ash
As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in Marden Ash and the rest of Essex. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We help you work out which suits your home. If the problem is working out where a cylinder could go and radiators that may be too small for a heat pump, we can help.
Older and listed homes in villages like Marden Ash need extra care, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.
Aftercare is simple, and most of it is in the manual: clear space around the outdoor unit, the cleaning the manual describes and a service at the recommended interval. It also keeps you on the right side of any warranty terms that ask for servicing.

For landlords and property managers
Under the GB F-gas rules, responsibility for leak checks is shared between whoever operates the equipment and the engineers who work on it. In a let or managed building, it’s worth agreeing who that operator is and we are happy to deal with whoever it is.
We also work for facilities teams in offices, schools and public buildings across Essex. Larger buildings can be done in stages to keep disruption down.
The process
You do not need to do much on the day. Just let us in and point us to the units, or to where they’ll be fitted, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and we explain what we’ve done. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in Marden Ash.
- We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
- Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
- From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
- Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
- Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
- Keep pets and children away from the work area
- Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
Getting a price
Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Add the address and what you’d like done, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.
Advice
After we’ve gone
Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. Our tips:
- Know the servicing conditions in your warranty
- Keep the MCS certificate with the manufacturer’s paperwork
- Use the settings explained at handover
Now and then in cold weather, the outdoor unit defrosts itself. It may give off steam or sound different for a few minutes and it’s part of how the system works.
Book a service every year. Your manufacturer’s warranty terms may say something about servicing.
System by system
Air-to-water heat pumps
An air-to-water heat pump costs £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. Eligible homes in England and Wales can get a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant towards it and the installer applies.
Air-to-air heat pumps
Air-to-air heat pumps are now covered by permitted development rules in England, subject to conditions. Cooling-only units are not included and need a check with the council.
Common questions in Marden Ash
Is Marden Ash within the area you cover?
Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.
Can I fit a heat pump in Marden Ash without planning permission?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. There’s a conservation area, the Chipping Ongar Conservation Area, close to central Marden Ash. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the planning department at Epping Forest council, normally the authority for Marden Ash.
Do I get paperwork after the visit?
Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.
How much time does a heat pump install need?
The work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We confirm the timing after the survey, so phone us on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form to arrange one.
Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?
It depends on the manufacturer’s terms. Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of the warranty, so check the terms or ask us. Keep every service record either way.
Will my radiators work with a heat pump?
It varies from room to room. The survey compares each radiator with the room’s needs and the quote shows what’s needed.
Can you set up regular servicing?
Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

What else we do in Marden Ash
Air source heat pumps in Marden Ash: the local picture
About 44% of homes in and around Marden Ash date from 1945 to 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and the last census (2021) found about 68% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Whether the walls and loft have been insulated makes a real difference to the heat pump size for homes of that period. Houses normally have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
With Hill Hall about 4.2 miles west, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump. If your home is one of the older properties near St James, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.
