  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades

If in doubt, phone us on 07833 053749 or use the quote form and we will say what we think before you book.

How we handle air source heat pumps in Great Tey

As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in Great Tey and the rest of Essex. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We will explain which type fits your home and why. If the problem is working out where a cylinder could go and comparing heat pump types, we can sort it out.

Homes around Great Tey normally have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we set them out on your quote. Terms differ from brand to brand, and we’re happy to talk you through them.

How the visit works

Wherever the system can be run before we leave, we run it and check it in operation. Then we show you what we have done and answer any questions, and anything that needs a follow-up is pointed out there and then. The visit takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Great Tey.

  1. We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. Fitting day: the outdoor unit is placed, the indoor side connected and the controls set up.
  5. The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where we can park and unload
  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in

Getting a price

Some jobs can be priced from photos, while others need a survey. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Advice

What happens if it’s left?

A heat pump sized without a proper heat loss survey can struggle in cold weather or run inefficiently. Doing the survey properly from the start avoids that. Waiting rarely makes an air conditioning problem smaller.

Homes, offices, shops and public buildings are all priced the same way: the equipment, the access, the work involved and the time it takes. Ask for a fixed-price quote and we’ll explain each part.

Looking after it afterwards

Systems last better with the right care. We suggest:

  • Leave indoor units unobstructed
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear all year
  • Ask about the grant before you commit

In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. It may give off steam or sound different for a few minutes, and that is normal.

Heat pumps prefer steady, low-temperature running, using the settings agreed at handover.

Homes in Great Tey and heat pumps

About 33% of homes across Great Tey and its surrounding area have been built since 2000, according to VOA council tax data, and about 84% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Lower heat loss in recent homes often means a smaller heat pump and fewer radiator changes. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs. Older homes near Church of St Barnabas may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Great Tey

Is Great Tey within the area you cover?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Can I fit a heat pump in Great Tey without planning permission?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. There’s a conservation area, the Great Tey Conservation Area, close to central Great Tey. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the local planning authority (for Great Tey, normally Colchester council).

How soon will you get back to me?

We reply to enquiries the same working day. If it’s an emergency, ring the 24/7 line instead.

Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?

The heat loss survey answers that, room by room. Rooms where the radiator is big enough stay as they are, and any that need upsizing are set out in the quote.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

Expect it to take from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. The cylinder, the radiators and the pipework make the biggest difference, and we confirm the timing with your quote.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, 24/7. When you call, tell us the make, what’s happening and any error code, and we will talk you through the next steps.

Do you look at the job first?

Yes. Every job is looked at first, either on a site survey or from pictures and details for simple jobs. A fixed-price quote follows.
