Air source heat pumps in Fordstreet
Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. With air-to-air, hot water has to come from something else. If the problem is not knowing whether a grant applies and deciding on the outdoor unit position, we can help.
Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Fordstreet, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.
Aftercare is simple, and most of it is in the manual: keep the outdoor unit clear, follow the manufacturer’s guidance on cleaning and book a service at the interval they recommend. It also keeps you on the right side of any warranty terms that ask for servicing.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Fordstreet
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Fordstreet?
Fordstreet is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.
Will a heat pump in Fordstreet need planning permission?
There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. Central Fordstreet sits inside the Fordstreet Conservation Area. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t face a road. Where needed, we check with the planning department at Colchester council, normally the authority for Fordstreet.
Do you protect the property while you work?
We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and we tidy up as we go. Before we leave, we clear up and run through the work with you.
Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?
Each manufacturer decides. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim and we’ll tell you what your brand asks for.
What accreditations do you have?
We’re an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We are also Checkatrade members.
What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?
Air-to-water replaces the boiler for heating and hot water, while air-to-air heats and cools rooms. The survey helps decide. We install both types.
Will I get records for the system?
Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.
Leave it or put it right?
From 1 April 2027, VAT on heat pumps in homes rises from 0% to 5%. It’s a date to bear in mind when planning, though the right time also depends on your home and heating. A dirty or faulty system works harder and costs more to run.
The cost depends on the type of system and how many units are involved, how easy the units are to reach and the parts and time the job needs. You get a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

How the visit works
Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. So on the day, you don’t need a separate electrician for the electrical side. The work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. For a place like Fordstreet, the timing is set with you and the travel is our side of the planning.
- First we talk through the property and the current system.
- Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
- We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
- Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
- Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.
Before we arrive
- Let us know where we can park and unload
- Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
- Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Heat pumps in Fordstreet: local notes
The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures show about 33% of homes in the Fordstreet area were built in 2000 or later, and about 84% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Lower heat loss in recent homes often means a smaller heat pump and fewer radiator changes. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
Every heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation. Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Margaret and St Catherine? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

System by system
Radiators and underfloor heating
Underfloor heating works well with heat pumps because it uses lower temperatures, and we can connect to it where it’s already in.
Air-to-water heat pumps
Air-to-water systems take heat from the air and put it into your central heating and hot water. It takes over from the boiler, and is MCS certified when we install it.
From one of our customers
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
