The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers grants towards heat pumps: £7,500 for air-to-water and ground source, and £2,500 for air-to-air in limited cases. The application goes through the installer.

Heat loss surveys

The survey works out the heat needed room by room. It’s the basis for sizing the heat pump and the radiators.

About our air source heat pumps in East Donyland

Until 31 March 2027, a heat pump installed in residential accommodation carries 0% VAT, with 5% from 1 April 2027. That follows HMRC Notice 708/6, and it does not apply to businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. Please treat this as general information rather than tax advice. We are often asked to deal with checking emitters for a heat pump and ageing boilers that will need replacing, across homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, radiator systems and underfloor heating.

If your home in or near East Donyland is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump.

Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Signs you need air source heat pumps in East Donyland

Homes off the gas grid, heated by oil or LPG, are often good candidates to look at. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme includes an extra £1,500, until March 2027, for air source or ground source heat pumps in homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas where the home is eligible.

Reasons to give us a call include:

  • Replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump
  • Checking emitters for a heat pump
  • Moving away from fossil-fuel heating

If your home is near Wivenhoe station and heated by a gas boiler, an air-to-water heat pump can replace it where the survey shows it suits.

How to choose an air conditioning engineer

After we’ve gone

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Leave space around the outdoor unit
  • Let the heat pump run steadily, as set up at handover
  • Keep to regular servicing

The warranty on the heat pump is the manufacturer’s, on its own terms. We explain the terms for your brand, including any servicing conditions.

Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off, using the settings agreed at handover.

What a heat pump looks like in East Donyland

East Donyland lies within about 2 miles of the sea. For a heat pump near the sea, ask about any coastal protection option the manufacturer offers. The 2021 Census found about 77% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Lawrence? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

East Donyland: your questions answered

Will you come out to East Donyland?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Will a heat pump in East Donyland need planning permission?

It depends on the property. There’s a conservation area, the Rowhedge Conservation Area, close to central East Donyland. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for East Donyland, usually Colchester council) first.

Do you protect the property while you work?

Protection goes down first: dust sheets over floors and anything close to the work. Any drilling is agreed with you first, and we clear up the dust and offcuts before we leave.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what’s needed, where things go and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.

Which brands do you work with?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and explain why.

What’s the price of a heat pump installation?

Expect £8,000–£16,000 for an air-to-water system, with 0% VAT on homes, before the grant is taken off. Where you land depends on the size of heat pump, any radiators that need changing and the hot water cylinder. Air-to-air is priced after a survey.

Does the grant cover air-to-air heat pumps?

The scheme offers £2,500 for air-to-air, but the conditions are strict. It won’t apply if the system is an add-on next to a boiler, and it must cover the whole heating demand.

What happens on the day

We keep the work area tidy as we go, with sheets down and mess cleared as we go. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to East Donyland.

  1. Step one is understanding the house, how it’s heated today and what you’d like to change.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the consumer unit is
  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit

How to get a quote

Here’s what helps us quote: the address and the type of property, a few photos, the make and model of any existing system and any symptoms, from error codes to drips. Then phone 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.
