Air source heat pumps across Fingringhoe

Air source heat pumps in Fingringhoe: the local picture

Fingringhoe is within about 2 miles of the coast. Near the coast, we choose the outdoor unit position with salt-laden wind in mind. The 2021 Census found about 77% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder. Draw a one-mile circle round the middle of Fingringhoe and it takes in 2 conservation areas. Historic England lists about 13 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Fingringhoe, including Church of St Andrew (grade I). That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with the local planning authority (typically Colchester council).

A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs. Period properties close to Church of St Andrew can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

Air source heat pumps in Fingringhoe

Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. That follows HMRC Notice 708/6, and it doesn’t apply to businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice. If the problem is checking emitters for a heat pump and questions about listed buildings or conservation areas, we can help.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Fingringhoe, so the design focuses on heat loss and radiators.

Each manufacturer sets its own warranty period. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, with longer extensions only on its air-to-water heat pumps. Whatever the brand, the manufacturer’s terms are explained on your quote.

Different systems, different jobs

Outdoor unit position and planning

The outdoor unit needs a position with good airflow, a solid base and a sensible pipe route. We also consider neighbours and noise, as MCS 020(a) includes a noise check.

Hot water cylinders

An air-to-water heat pump heats hot water through a cylinder. The survey looks at where it can go particularly in homes with a combi boiler.

Fingringhoe questions

Is Fingringhoe within the area you cover?

Yes. Fingringhoe is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Fingringhoe?

Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Fingringhoe is in England, where it applies. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and isn’t an add-on to a boiler. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Is a heat pump permitted development?

That depends on your home and the unit’s position. Flats have tighter limits, conservation areas add conditions, and Article 4 directions can remove rights and we look at it during the survey.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we will propose a schedule and quote for it. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Will I get records for the system?

Yes. Every visit is written up, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. Keep them with the manual and the warranty documents.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim and we’ll tell you what your brand asks for.

How it works

Our engineers bring the tools, gauges and access equipment the job needs. You only need to give us clear access to the units, or their planned positions, and to the fuse board. The visit takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. If a lane or gateway near Fingringhoe is tight for a van, let us know and we’ll plan for it.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. A heat loss survey is carried out, room by room.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. We install, commission and register the system under MCS.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
  • Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits

What owners can safely do

Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo of the display helps even more.

Owners can handle the everyday basics: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

When something else is needed

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what air source heat pumps won’t do:

  • Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form and we’ll tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Hot water cylinders
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Underfloor heating
  • Radiator systems
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
