About our air source heat pumps in Church Hougham
A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home, using electricity to drive the process. The technology is close to air conditioning, which is why we install both, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. The work covers air-to-air heat pumps, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and radiator systems, and the jobs we see most are deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home and checking eligibility for a heat pump grant.
For a home around Church Hougham that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.
Warranty on the equipment is the manufacturer’s own, on the manufacturer’s terms, and we explain those terms on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, and we’re happy to talk you through them.

Church Hougham questions
Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Church Hougham?
It can. Church Hougham is within about 1 mile of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor units. The outdoor unit position, its fixings and regular servicing all help near the sea.
Will a heat pump in Church Hougham need planning permission?
The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. A conservation area takes in the middle of Church Hougham. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the planning department at Dover council, usually the authority for Church Hougham.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
A typical installation takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. We plan the work so you are without heating for as little time as possible and agreed before we start.
Which accreditations do you hold?
We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We are also Checkatrade members.
Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?
Some radiators may be fine as they are, and some may need to be larger. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators give out less heat so we check every radiator against the room’s heat loss.
Which type of heat pump is right for my home?
Air-to-water heats radiators or underfloor heating and hot water; air-to-air heats rooms through indoor units and can cool them. With air-to-air, hot water needs another source and the survey helps decide.
Can I do any of the installation myself?
Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.
How it works
You do not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in and show us the units, or where they’re going, and the rest is down to us. At the end, we tidy up and run through the work with you. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to Church Hougham.
- It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
- The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
- A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
- Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.
Preparing for the visit
- Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
- Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
- Clear access to the fuse board
Getting a price
Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. After a look at the job, by pictures or a survey, the price is fixed. To start, call us on 07833 053749 or send an email.
Advice
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Bigger systems bring extra duties: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We can arrange it, prepare the system for it and fix what it finds.
If you look after several properties, we can quote and plan the work across all of them. Each property gets its own records, so the files stay tidy.

What a heat pump looks like in Church Hougham
The coast is only about 1 mile from Church Hougham. For a heat pump near the sea, ask about any coastal protection option the manufacturer offers. Census 2021 figures found about 77% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.
If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St Lawrence, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen. Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler.

Before you call an engineer
Leave the units and pipework where they are. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrics need care too. Ask us to quote for a move instead.
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
A customer’s words
“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
