Air source heat pumps in Charlton

Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Charlton

A £2,500 grant is available for some air-to-air heat pumps, with conditions. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, cover the whole heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer and be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler does not qualify. If you’re dealing with checking whether planning permission is needed and finding a place for the outdoor unit, we can help.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Charlton, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details for an installation, a fault and repair note for a repair, or a record of the service. File it with the manual so it’s to hand next time.

System by system

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers grants towards heat pumps: £7,500 for air-to-water (and ground source), and £2,500 for air-to-air with strict conditions. The application goes through the installer.

Air-to-air heat pumps

The £2,500 grant for air-to-air applies only when the system replaces the fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s demand. It also has to be fitted by an MCS certified installer, in a home.

Looking after your system

Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. A few tips:

  • Keep the MCS certificate with the manufacturer’s paperwork
  • Know the servicing conditions in your warranty
  • Leave indoor units unobstructed

Should you have questions after the install, call 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we’ll look into it. A yearly service is a good habit.

Have the system serviced regularly. Your manufacturer’s warranty terms may say something about servicing.

What we do, step by step

Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. On the day, both are in the same hands. The work takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in Charlton.

  1. First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
  2. We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
  3. We explain which type of heat pump suits the home and whether a grant could apply.
  4. Installation follows on the agreed dates.
  5. We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in
  • Clear access to the fuse board
  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time

Get a fixed-price quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Add the address and what you’d like done, and many jobs can be priced from that.

Advice

Charlton questions

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Charlton?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The centre of Charlton is in the Charlton Conservation Area. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t face a road. Where necessary, we check with the planning department at North Hertfordshire council, normally the authority for Charlton.

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Charlton?

Charlton is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and isn’t an add-on to a boiler. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We are also Checkatrade members.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

For air-to-water, it’s £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. Air-to-air systems are priced after a survey, with the VAT confirmed on your quote.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

The right choice depends on the property and what you need. The grant is £7,500 for eligible air-to-water systems and £2,500 for air-to-air in limited cases. We explain the options after the survey.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule and quote for it. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

When something else is needed

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work can’t put right:

  • Improving the building’s insulation
  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
  • Tax advice on your own circumstances

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 and we will say what we think.
