Your questions about air source heat pumps in Bighton

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Bighton?

Bighton is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Is Bighton within the area you cover?

Yes. Bighton is within the area we cover across London and the South East. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

What does an air-to-water heat pump cost?

Expect £8,000–£16,000 for an air-to-water system, with 0% VAT on homes, before the grant is taken off. Where you land depends on the size of heat pump, any radiators that need changing and the hot water cylinder, and air-to-air systems are priced after a survey.

Will I need planning consent for an air source heat pump?

Many installations on houses in England fall under permitted development, subject to the rules. Listed buildings are excluded, and listed building consent is separate, so we check for your property.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. That isn’t optional: it’s required by law, and AirCon Doctor is certified.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

Air-to-water heats radiators or underfloor heating and hot water; air-to-air heats rooms through indoor units and can cool them. Air-to-air doesn’t heat hot water and the survey helps decide.

What warranty do I get?

Warranty comes from the manufacturer and depends on the brand and product. For instance, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.

How we handle air source heat pumps in Bighton

As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in Bighton and the rest of Hampshire. Air-to-water systems feed your radiators or underfloor heating and hot water cylinder, while air-to-air systems heat rooms directly through indoor units and can cool them too. We will explain which type fits your home and why. If you’re dealing with a boiler that’s getting old and no space for a hot water cylinder, we can help.

If your home in or near Bighton is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.

The records are your system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer, so keep it safe.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: check the mode, the set temperature, the remote’s batteries and the breaker. If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off and phone us on 07833 053749.

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

Air source heat pumps in Bighton: the local picture

About 10 listed entries lie within half a mile of central Bighton, Church of All Saints (grade I) among them. Where a home is affected, the outdoor unit position is settled with Winchester City council, normally the planning authority here before the heat pump design is finished. The last census (2021) found about 69% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Hinton Ampner House, roughly 4.3 miles south, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings. Older homes near Church of All Saints may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

Leave it or put it right?

From 1 April 2027, VAT on heat pumps in homes rises from 0% to 5%. If you are thinking about a heat pump, that date is worth knowing, though the right time also depends on your home and heating. Dealing with it now is usually simpler than a breakdown later.

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we look at the job first, from photos or on a survey, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

What we do, step by step

The first job on site is protection: dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work and nothing is moved without asking you. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. It takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes, and we clear up before we go. For a village like Bighton, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you are eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.

Every quote shows the VAT clearly, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. Homes, businesses and different kinds of work can be treated differently for VAT, so we confirm it on the quote. For a fixed-price quote, call 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.

What the work involves, system by system

Heat loss surveys

The survey works out the heat needed room by room. It’s the basis for sizing the heat pump and the radiators.

Air-to-water heat pumps

An air-to-water heat pump heats water for your radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water cylinder. It takes over from the boiler, and is MCS certified when we install it.

From one of our customers

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
