Air source heat pumps for Astrope

About our air source heat pumps in Astrope

Air-to-water heat pumps heat your hot water through a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. Air-to-air systems do not heat hot water, so you’ll need another way to do that. Common call-outs are for finding a place for the outdoor unit and a boiler that’s getting old, on underfloor heating, air-to-air heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps.

In a place like Astrope, some homes are listed, and permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings, so we check consent first.

Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight, and every service is written up.

For landlords and property managers

For anyone managing more than one building, we can plan visits across the portfolio and price them together. Every address has its own paperwork, so each one has its own history.

We work for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as homeowners and businesses. Let us know who will give us access and who the records should go to and we will copy in whoever needs it.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

Common questions in Astrope

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Astrope?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Historic England lists about 12 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Astrope. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with Dacorum council, which is normally the planning authority for Astrope.

Is Astrope within the area you cover?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

For refrigerant work, both the engineer and the company need the right F-gas credentials. Ask to see proof before booking anyone, and we’re happy to show ours.

Do you work on systems someone else installed?

Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.

Do I get paperwork after the visit?

Yes. Every visit is written up, and any work on the refrigerant circuit goes in the F-Gas records. File them with the system’s paperwork.

Can I get a grant for an air-to-air heat pump?

There is a £2,500 grant for air-to-air, but only under strict conditions. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating, meet the home’s full heating demand, be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.

What a heat pump looks like in Astrope

About 36% of households live in terraced houses, according to the last census (2021). Shared walls keep a terrace’s heat loss down, while gardens next door make the noise check on the outdoor unit important.

With Ascott House about 4.8 miles north, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump. Older homes near Church of St Mary (Church of England) may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

Astrope is about 5 miles east of Aylesbury, in Hertfordshire. Astrope gets the same approach as every job we take on: diagnosis first, a fixed price and proper paperwork when we’ve finished. Count every place we list in Hertfordshire and you reach 381, with Astrope on the list. For properties nearby, see our London page (35 miles or so).

How it works

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. The visit takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in Astrope.

  1. Step one is understanding the house, how it’s heated today and what you’d like to change.
  2. The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
  3. The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking restrictions near the property
  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit

Heat loss surveys

A heat loss survey measures how much heat each room loses on a cold day. It’s the basis for sizing the heat pump and the radiators.

Air-to-air heat pumps

A £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is available for air-to-air only if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the full heating demand. It must be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.

From one of our customers

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
