Air source heat pumps in Berkhamsted

Questions from Berkhamsted

Is the heat pump grant available in Berkhamsted?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Berkhamsted, if they qualify. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Is Berkhamsted in your area for air source heat pumps?

Yes. We work across London and the South East from our base in East Grinstead, and Berkhamsted is part of that. Get in touch with the details and we reply the same working day.

Why use an F-Gas certified company?

Anyone installing, repairing or servicing the refrigerant side must be qualified, and their company certified. Ask to see proof before booking anyone and we will gladly show you ours.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, usually whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

How do you keep the place clean during the work?

We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and the area is kept tidy throughout. At the end, we clear up and show you what we have done.

When will I hear back?

On the same working day you contact us. Then we agree a date that works for you, with a fixed price before work starts.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

It takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. How much of the heating changes decides most of the time, and we confirm the timing with your quote.

About our air source heat pumps in Berkhamsted

Every installation starts with a heat loss survey. It shows how much heat each room needs on a cold day so the system is sized to match. Sizing by rule of thumb isn’t good enough. Common call-outs are for not knowing whether a grant applies and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life, on underfloor heating, air-to-water heat pumps and air-to-air heat pumps.

Around Berkhamsted, most people asking about heat pumps have a gas boiler now. We survey the heat loss, radiators, hot water and the outdoor unit position, then design and quote.

Aftercare is simple, and most of it is in the manual: keep the outdoor unit clear, follow the manufacturer’s guidance on cleaning and book a service at the interval they recommend. That also helps where the warranty terms ask for regular servicing.

What affects the quote in Berkhamsted

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • Which make and model is being fitted or worked on
  • The pipe route between the units
  • One-off work versus a regular service cycle

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we look at the job first, from pictures or on a survey, and the price is agreed before work begins.

Asking for a quote

To speed up the quote, send us:

  • Any error code or flashing light on the display
  • Any previous service or F-Gas records
  • Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it

Here’s what helps us quote: the address and the type of property, a few pictures, the make and model of any existing system and anything you’ve noticed, such as an error code or a noise. Once you have those, call 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk.

What we do, step by step

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. On site, it takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Pictures of the space, the fuse board and the outside wall are a good start for a job in Berkhamsted.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. Installation follows on the agreed dates.
  5. We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
  • Keep pets out of the rooms we are working in

Honest limits

Air source heat pumps can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:

  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Promising eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
  • Planning decisions, which rest with the council

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 07833 053749 or send an email and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Where we work

  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Underfloor heating
  • Radiator systems
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Air-to-water heat pumps

What owners can safely do

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

What a heat pump looks like in Berkhamsted

At about 27 miles from central London, Berkhamsted sits inside the area we cover across London and the South East. Central Berkhamsted is inside the Berkhamsted Conservation Area. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 28 within half a mile of the centre, such as Berkhampstead School Old Building (grade I). So the heat pump survey asks two extra questions here: is the home listed, and is it inside a conservation area?

Live in one of the older houses around Church of All Saints? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. Homeowners near Berkhamsted station often ask whether a heat pump can take over from the boiler, and the heat loss survey answers that.

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
