Air source heat pumps in Ashley

How we handle air source heat pumps in Ashley

Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, cover the whole heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer and be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler doesn’t qualify. Common call-outs are for a boiler that’s getting old and plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump, on air-to-water heat pumps, air-to-air heat pumps and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas.

Older and listed homes in villages like Ashley need extra care, and permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings, so consent comes first.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: commissioning details for an installation, a fault and repair note for a repair, or a record of the service. Keep it with the system’s paperwork so it’s to hand next time.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Ashley

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Ashley?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Ashley, if they qualify. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and is not an add-on to a boiler. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Will you come out to Ashley?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

Air-to-water replaces the boiler for heating and hot water, while air-to-air heats and cools rooms. The survey helps decide. Both are part of what we install.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we will agree what happens next.

When will I hear back?

The same working day. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, with a fixed price before work starts.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. We offer maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is written up, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.

Air source heat pumps around Ashley

Historic England lists about 8 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Ashley, including Church of St Mary (grade II*). So the heat pump survey asks two extra questions here: is the home listed, and is it inside a conservation area? About 37% of homes across Ashley and its surrounding area were built before 1919, according to VOA council tax data, and about 83% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Period properties close to St Mary's Church can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first. With Mottisfont Abbey about 4.3 miles south-west, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

Ashley is about 6 miles north of Romsey, in Hampshire. Our engineers cover Ashley for air source heat pumps, along with the rest of Hampshire. Across Hampshire, we cover 683 places, and Ashley is one of them. Guildford, roughly 40 miles off, has its own page on this site.

What happens if it’s left?

For eligible off-gas homes on oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is on offer until March 2027. For homes that qualify, that is a reason to look into it now. A dirty or faulty system works harder and costs more to run.

Several rooms, units or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Mention every unit or room you need covered, and you’ll get one fixed price.

Owner checks or an engineer?

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

Looking after your system

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Leave indoor units unobstructed
  • Keep the MCS certificate with the manufacturer’s paperwork
  • Look at insulation alongside the heat pump

In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. It may give off steam or sound different for a few minutes and it’s part of how the system works.

Heat pumps prefer steady, low-temperature running, using the settings agreed at handover.

The process

Protection comes first: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby, and we ask before moving anything. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. The work on site takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes, and we clear up before we go. If a lane or gateway near Ashley is tight for a van, let us know and we will plan for it.

  1. First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
  2. A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
  3. We explain which type of heat pump suits the home and whether a grant could apply.
  4. Installation follows on the agreed dates.
  5. The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
  • Let us know where the consumer unit is

How to get a quote

Some jobs can be priced from pictures, while others need a survey. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.
