Questions from St Leonards
Will air conditioning in St Leonards need planning permission?
It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. Central St Leonards sits inside the Markwick Terrace, St Leonards Conservation Area. A system that heats as well as cools may not need an application on a house, provided it stays within the permitted development limits. Cooling-only units get no such allowance, and listed buildings and road-facing positions in conservation areas need more care. We speak to the planning department at Hastings council, normally the authority for St Leonards when it matters.
Do you cover St Leonards for air conditioning?
Yes. We work across London and the South East from our base in East Grinstead, and St Leonards is part of that. To start, phone us on 07833 053749 or send an email with a few photos.
Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?
The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
Can you set up regular servicing?
Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule with a fixed price. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. We always look before we price, either on a site survey or from pictures and details for simple jobs. Then you get a fixed-price quote.
Can I have air conditioning in a flat?
That depends on the lease, the building and where the outdoor unit could go. An outdoor unit can sometimes go on a balcony, roof or rear wall, with consent, and we check the options on the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.
Will you work on another installer’s system?
Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.
Air conditioning in St Leonards
Wall-mounted, multi-split, ducted and cassette systems are all part of what we install, plus VRF systems for bigger commercial buildings. Which one suits you depends on the space, the building and how much of the unit you want to see, and we explain the options on the survey. Modern air conditioning heats as well as cools: in heating mode they work as an air-to-air heat pump, which is why many owners use theirs all year.
The outdoor unit position is the biggest single decision: airflow, noise towards neighbours, pipe length and access for servicing all count.
Air conditioning in a town like St Leonards normally means a house, sometimes a flat or a converted building in the centre. The usual starting point is the hottest bedroom, a home office or a conservatory, with more rooms added on a multi-split if needed.
If a fault appears while the equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty, tell us the make, model and installation date. We’ll explain how the manufacturer’s terms are likely to apply before any chargeable work goes ahead.

Leave it or put it right?
Size matters more than brand. An undersized unit runs hard and still cannot keep the room cool; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy. Sizing each room properly on the survey avoids both. It’s easier to plan the job in St Leonards before the warm weather arrives.
The cost depends on the system and the number of rooms or units, how easy the units are to reach and what the work involves. We give you a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.

Aftercare tips
A little care keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:
- Leave space around the outdoor unit
- File the paperwork with the manual
- Have the system serviced once a year
An annual service keeps the system running efficiently, and some manufacturers make regular servicing a condition of their warranty. We’ll remind you when it’s due if you’d like.
Use sensible settings. Choose the right mode and a comfortable temperature rather than the lowest setting and keep doors and windows shut while it runs.
Air conditioning around St Leonards
St Leonards is within about 1 mile of the coast. That’s worth knowing for an install, as salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor coils and fixings, so we choose the position and fixings with that in mind. Valuation Office Agency council tax records put about 57% of homes in and around St Leonards before 1919, and the last census (2021) found about 57% of households live in flats. Older homes often have solid walls, which take longer to core drill, so we plan pipe routes carefully and keep them as discreet as we can. In flats, the lease and the freeholder usually decide where an outdoor unit can go, and the permitted development rules for flats are tighter.
If you commute from St Leonards Warrior Square station and work from home on other days, one wall-mounted unit in the home office is often all that’s needed. Living close to St John the Evangelist's Church? Some older properties in parts like that are protected, and the survey finds out whether yours is.

What air conditioning will not do
We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work cannot put right:
- A room that can’t take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
- A lack of fresh air (most split systems recirculate room air rather than bringing fresh air in, which is a job for ventilation)
- Central heating repairs
If in doubt, ring us on 07833 053749 or send an email and we’ll say what we think before booking.
What the work covers

How it works
We keep the work area tidy as we go, with sheets down and mess cleared as we go. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. The visit takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access. Shops and offices in St Leonards can normally stay open while we work, or we come after hours.
- We survey the rooms and the outside of the property, or work from photos and details for simple jobs.
- Each room is sized and you get a fixed-price quote setting out the equipment and the unit positions.
- On the day, we fit the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
- Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
- Last comes the run-up: every mode checked, the controls explained and the paperwork left with you.
How to prepare
- Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go
- Clear access to the fuse board
- Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
How to get a quote
Getting a quote is straightforward. Call or email with a few details and we’ll come back to you the same working day. If we need to see the property first, we book a survey at a time that works for you.
