About our air conditioning in Hawthorn
We fit wall-mounted splits, multi-split systems, ducted systems and ceiling cassettes, with VRF for larger buildings. Which one suits you depends on the space, the building and how much of the unit you want to see and we talk you through it on the survey. For air conditioning in Hawthorn, you get one team and one number from survey to sign-off.
Space outside is rarely the problem in a place like Hawthorn. The questions are more often the age of the walls, the electrics and how far the pipes need to run.
Aftercare is simple, and most of it is in the manual: keep the outdoor unit clear, follow the manufacturer’s guidance on cleaning and book a service at the interval they recommend. It also keeps you on the right side of any warranty terms that ask for servicing.

What air conditioning can’t fix
We’d rather tell you now than sell you work that will not help, so these are the things it will not cover:
- Stuffy rooms that need fresh air rather than cooling
- A room that cannot take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
- Damp or condensation caused by leaks or poor ventilation in the building (that needs the cause fixing)
If in doubt, call us on 07833 053749 and we’ll say what we think.
What the work covers
- Ceiling cassettes
- Multi-split systems
- Ducted systems
- Wall-mounted split systems
- VRF systems
- Air-to-air heat pumps
Different systems, different jobs
Multi-split systems
A two-room multi-split is typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT. The route from the outdoor unit to each room is the main variable.
Wall-mounted split systems
Bedrooms, offices and living spaces are where wall-mounted units are most often fitted. We choose the position for even airflow and easy filter access, and away from where the air would blow straight onto people.
Questions from Hawthorn
Is planning permission needed for air conditioning in Hawthorn?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Central Hawthorn is a short walk from the Under the Wood Conservation Area. An air-to-air system used for heating as well as cooling can be permitted development on a house if it meets the conditions, but a cooling-only unit isn’t covered, listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where needed, we check with the local planning authority (for Hawthorn, normally Canterbury City council).
Will you come out to Hawthorn?
Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.
Is the equipment covered by a warranty?
The manufacturer’s warranty, on the manufacturer’s terms. Terms differ by brand, and we set them out on your quote.
Do you work on commercial properties?
Yes. From a single let flat to offices, shops and public buildings, the approach is the same: a look first, a fixed-price quote and written records.
Does air conditioning work as heating?
Yes, most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat a room in winter. The Energy Saving Trust points out that an air-to-air heat pump is often just called air conditioning. We confirm the heating function of the model we quote.
Do I need a new electrical circuit?
Most systems need their own supply from the consumer unit. Adding a new circuit is notifiable building work under Part P unless it’s done by a registered competent person, and as NICEIC approved contractors we install and certify it as part of the job.
Can the outdoor unit go on a roof or at ground level?
Wall brackets, ground level and flat roofs are all options, wherever the pipe route, airflow and servicing access work best. Noise near bedrooms and boundaries is part of the decision and position can affect planning.
Air conditioning in Hawthorn: the local picture
At about 2 miles from the coast, Hawthorn is close enough for sea air to matter. Near the sea, outdoor unit position matters more: sheltered from salt-laden wind where possible, on fixings that will not rust. About 82% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Houses normally have a side or rear wall with room for the outdoor unit, and a multi-split can serve several rooms from one outdoor unit.
Most people start with the room that gets hottest, then add more rooms on a multi-split if needed. Around Church of St Mary the Virgin, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install.

What owners can safely do
There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.
Write down what you notice: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.

How it works
The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, the work takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Hawthorn.
- We survey the rooms and the outside of the property, or work from photos and details for simple jobs.
- You receive one fixed figure covering the kit, the fitting and the positions we agreed.
- The indoor unit is fixed in place, the outside unit positioned, and the connecting runs put in tidily.
- We connect the supply, pressure test the pipework and evacuate it before the refrigerant is released.
- Finally, it’s commissioned, tested in each mode and handed over with the F-Gas records.
Before we arrive
- Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
- Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
- Let us know where the consumer unit is

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
