Air conditioning installation in Guildford

Guildford is a historic Surrey town with a centre on a steep high street, a university, a large office and retail market and a spread of suburbs and villages around it. We install, service and repair air conditioning across the town and the borough, from one wall-mounted unit in a bedroom or study to multi-split systems for a family house and commercial systems for offices, shops and restaurants.

We’re based in East Grinstead, West Sussex, and we work across Surrey, Guildford included. We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We fit leading brands, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and we explain the manufacturer’s warranty for your chosen unit on the quote.

Here’s how it works. We look at the property on a site survey, or from photos and measurements for straightforward jobs. You get a fixed-price quote. We install, repair or service the system. Then we commission it, record the refrigerant details for your F-Gas records and show you the controls. A single-room split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. Our Guildford cost guide explains what affects the price.

For existing systems, we repair all makes, with diagnosis from £75 + VAT, and an annual service is typically £95–£150 + VAT.

VAT on home installs is worth understanding before you compare quotes. HMRC’s Notice 708/6 zero-rates the installation of air source heat pumps in homes until 31 March 2027, and HMRC says most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps. Whether a given product qualifies depends on the facts, so we confirm the VAT on your quote. Offices, shops and other businesses pay the standard rate. This is general information, not tax advice.

Once your system is in, a yearly service keeps it efficient and helps you meet the manufacturer’s warranty conditions. We clean filters and coils, check the refrigerant circuit and electrics, clear the drain and test it in both modes.

Family houses, period homes and lettings

Much of Guildford’s housing is family houses: Victorian and Edwardian homes close to the centre, interwar semis, and larger detached houses in the suburbs and villages. For these, the usual goal is cool bedrooms on summer nights. A multi-split system serves several rooms from one outdoor unit, typically £4,500–£8,500 + VAT for three to five rooms. We place the outdoor unit at the side or rear, out of sight from the road and away from neighbours’ windows.

Guildford is hilly, and that affects installs more than people expect. A house on a slope may have a lower ground floor at the back, a raised garden or limited side access. Those can be useful: a lower terrace can hide an outdoor unit well. But they also change pipe routes and access for the install, so we look at them carefully on the survey.

Older houses with solid walls need core drilling for pipework, and period rooms deserve neat work. We plan where pipes and cables run inside so they sit behind furniture, in cupboards or in slim trunking, and we choose indoor units that suit the room. Some owners prefer a ducted system in the loft, with only small grilles in the ceilings.

With a university in town, Guildford also has plenty of rented homes and shared houses. If you’re a landlord, our guide to air conditioning for landlords covers servicing, records and what tenants need to know. If you rent, you’ll need your landlord’s consent first.

Most split systems heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. If you want to replace a gas or oil boiler altogether, an air-to-water heat pump is the main option, and we’re MCS certified to fit one.

Noise matters on quiet residential roads. We choose positions away from bedroom windows and patios, use anti-vibration mounts as standard and size the unit so it isn’t working flat out at night. Our guide to air conditioning noise explains what to expect from modern units.

Stoughton Road, Guildford (GU2)

Property
A 1970s semi-detached house.
Work carried out
Installation of a Mitsubishi Electric wall-mounted unit in the living room and a second unit in the master bedroom. The 1970s cavity wall construction made pipework routing simpler than older solid-wall properties. The outdoor unit was positioned on a purpose-built bracket on the side elevation.
Outcome
The family reported significant improvement in summer comfort and now uses the system’s heat pump function as supplementary heating during spring and autumn, reducing gas consumption.

Planning and conservation in Guildford

Planning across the borough is handled by Guildford Borough Council, whose planning hub covers pre-application advice, applications, trees and conservation areas. Its planning restrictions search shows whether a property is in a conservation area or close to protected trees. The council has conservation area appraisals for several areas, including the town centre, and the borough has many listed buildings.

For houses, an air source heat pump can be permitted development if it meets set limits. The Planning Portal’s heat pump guidance sets them out: an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), not used solely for cooling, not on a pitched roof, and in conservation areas, not on a wall or roof facing the road. Detached houses may have two units, other houses one. Flats have tighter limits. A cooling-only air conditioning unit isn’t covered, so it needs the council’s view. Listed building consent is a separate matter; our listed building guide covers it.

We’ll tell you on the survey which route your job is likely to need and supply the product data, noise figures and drawings for any application. The council makes the decision, and we only start once consents are in place.

A new circuit for the system is notifiable under Part P. As the Planning Portal explains, a registered competent person can self-certify it. We’re NICEIC approved, so we certify the work and hand you the paperwork.

If you’re in a flat, check your lease as well. Most need the landlord’s written consent before an outdoor unit is fixed to the building, and we can supply the details your landlord will want.

Offices, shops and restaurants in Guildford

Guildford’s town centre has a busy mix of offices, shops, restaurants and salons, and the business parks around the town add larger offices and labs. We install and maintain commercial air conditioning for them, from cassettes in open-plan offices to VRF across several floors. See our pages on offices, restaurants and schools and colleges.

Business systems need leak checks above the F-gas thresholds, refrigerant records and, over 12 kW, TM44 inspections. Our maintenance contracts cover it all, and our 24/7 line covers breakdowns.

On the steep town centre streets, access is often the hardest part of a commercial job. Many buildings back onto narrow lanes, have little outside space and sit next to listed neighbours. We look at roofs, rear yards and internal routes for pipework, plan deliveries and work around trading hours where we can. For schools and colleges, the holidays are usually the best time to install, so it helps to talk to us well ahead.

For restaurants and cafés, we size units for a full room on a hot evening and position them so diners don’t sit in a cold draught. Kitchens need separate thought; see our kitchen air conditioning page.

How it works

  1. Diagnose. We look at the rooms or building on a site survey, or from your photos for simple jobs, and work out what size and type of system it needs.
  2. Quote. You get a fixed-price quote with the make and model of every unit, the pipe runs, electrics and condensate route, and the VAT.
  3. Treat. An F-Gas certified engineer installs, repairs or services the system, with any new circuit done by our NICEIC approved electricians.
  4. Sign off. We commission and leak-test the system, keep the F-Gas records, explain the controls and go through the manufacturer’s warranty terms for your brand.

Questions from Guildford

Do you cover all of Guildford borough?

Yes, the town and the surrounding villages. Send us your postcode and we’ll confirm.

Can you hide the units in a period house?

Often. We choose rear or side positions outside, run pipes discreetly and can suggest a ducted system with ceiling grilles where the loft allows.

Do I need planning permission in Guildford?

It depends on the unit, the property and its position. Use the council’s planning restrictions search to check for a conservation area, and we’ll advise on the survey.

I’m a landlord. Can you look after my rental?

Yes. We install and service systems in rented homes and keep the records you need. Tenants should get the landlord’s consent first.

How much will it cost?

A single-room split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT, supplied and fitted. You get a fixed-price quote after the survey.

When will you reply?

We reply to every enquiry the same working day. For a breakdown, call our 24/7 line on 07833 053749.
