What owners can safely do

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

Write down what you notice: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.

Air conditioning installation in Enfield

Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit is notifiable unless a registered competent person does it, and our NICEIC approval means we install and certify it ourselves. A lot of the calls we get from Enfield are about one room that’s too hot to sleep or work in. A single-room split system is often the answer, from £1,200 + VAT.

London homes in Enfield can be short of outside space, so the outdoor unit may end up on a rear wall, a flat roof or a balcony. We look at noise towards neighbours and windows as well as looks, and we plan the pipe route so it’s as short and tidy as the building allows.

Looking after a system is mostly common sense: keep the outdoor unit clear, follow the manufacturer’s guidance on cleaning and book a service at the interval they recommend. It also keeps you on the right side of any warranty terms that ask for servicing.

How the visit works

The first job on site is protection: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby and nothing is moved without asking you. Then the electrics are made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access, and we clear up before we go. Managed buildings in London often need contractors booked in, and we can deal with the agent for a job in Enfield.

  1. First comes a site survey, or photos and measurements for a straightforward job.
  2. We size the system for each room, then send a fixed-price quote with the units and where they go.
  3. The indoor unit is fixed in place, the outside unit positioned, and the connecting runs put in tidily.
  4. We connect the supply, pressure test the pipework and evacuate it before the refrigerant is released.
  5. The system is commissioned and checked in every mode, and we hand over the controls, F-Gas records and warranty information.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
  • Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
  • Tell us about parking and loading

Getting a price

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Advice

System by system

Ducted systems

Ducted systems need space for the unit and the ductwork, and access for servicing. The survey confirms whether there’s room.

Wall-mounted split systems

Wall-mounted units suit bedrooms, living rooms, home offices and small commercial rooms. The unit goes where it spreads the air well and the filters are easy to reach, and away from where the air would blow straight onto people.

Air conditioning around Enfield

About 31% of homes across Enfield and its surrounding area were built between the wars, according to VOA council tax data, and Census 2021 figures found about 45% of households live in flats. Homes of that age normally have cavity or solid brick walls, and we check which before planning the pipe route. For a flat, we look at balconies, flat roofs and rear walls for the outdoor unit, and the lease often needs checking first. For a London home, we plan the outdoor unit position, the pipe route and any approvals before the day.

Around Church of St Andrew, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install. Close to Enfield Town station? A small study or box room used for work can usually be cooled with a single indoor unit.

Questions from Enfield

Is air conditioning in Enfield permitted development?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Central Enfield sits inside a conservation area. A system that heats as well as cools may not need an application on a house, provided it stays within the permitted development limits. Cooling-only units get no such allowance, and listed buildings and road-facing positions in conservation areas need more care. We speak to the planning department at Enfield council, normally the authority for Enfield when it matters.

Do you cover Enfield for air conditioning?

We do: Enfield falls inside our working area. Get in touch with the details and we reply the same working day.

Which brands do you work with?

Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and explain why.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

It depends on the manufacturer’s terms. Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of the warranty, so check the terms or ask us. Either way, keep a record of every service.

Can I use air conditioning to heat a room?

Typically, yes. A heat pump moves heat from the outside air into the room, so it gives out more heat than the electricity it uses. To replace your main heating, there are extra conditions, including for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps.

Does air conditioning need its own electrical supply?

Normally, yes. We check your consumer unit on the survey and include any electrical work on the quote and we install and certify the circuit as NICEIC approved contractors.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Looking after your system

After the visit, a few habits help:

  • Leave space around the outdoor unit
  • Close windows and doors while the system is cooling
  • Clean the filters every few weeks when the system is in heavy use

You get the paperwork that matters: F-Gas records, commissioning details and the manufacturer’s warranty terms. Keep them with the manual, because the manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Don’t ignore small changes. Water from the indoor unit, a new rattle or a code on the display typically means something needs attention, and early repairs are typically simpler.
