Air conditioning in ME6: how it works
Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Adding a new circuit is notifiable building work under Part P unless it’s done by a registered competent person, and our NICEIC approval means we install and certify it ourselves. We’re often asked to deal with commercial rooms that are too warm for staff and a room that’s unbearable on warm days, on ducted systems, air-to-air heat pumps and ceiling cassettes.
We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your pictures or the details you gave us. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. From there, the work takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system.
- You send pictures, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
- Output, positions and price are settled before anything is booked.
- Sheets go down first, then the indoor unit and the condenser are mounted.
- Connections are made, checked for leaks and pulled down to a vacuum.
- The system is commissioned, the controls explained and the F-Gas records handed over.
How we quote
One room or a whole building, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the equipment. The price is fixed before work begins, and the quote sets out the VAT.
Why people in ME6 choose us
- MCS certified heat pump installers
- NICEIC approved for electrical work
- A fixed price before any work starts
- Manufacturer’s warranty terms explained on your quote
Getting a quote
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either on a site survey or, for simple jobs, from your photos and details. After that, we send a fixed price before any work starts.
Local landmarks in Snodland
Around Snodland, our work takes us to homes and businesses near Snodland CofE Primary School, The Monks Head pub and Church of the New Jerusalem and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include The Holmesdale School (under half a mile south) and Holborough Marshes (0.7 miles north-east). There’s a railway station in Snodland itself: Snodland station. Well-known places in the area include Leybourne Castle (1.9 miles south-west) and Medway megaliths (2.8 miles east). For a walk, there’s Burham Down and Blue Bell Hill.
Air conditioning across ME6
In ME6, as across England, the same permitted development rules apply: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.
ME6 is part of a working area that runs from Greater London to the Sussex coast and out to Oxfordshire and Essex. You reach the same people wherever you are in it.
Snodland: Homes near Church of the New Jerusalem are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it. Close to Snodland station? A small study or box room used for work can normally be cooled with a single indoor unit.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Where a tenant occupies the property but the landlord owns the system, it’s worth checking the agreement for who looks after the system. We can quote either party, and the paperwork can go to both.
Records are where property maintenance often slips. Each visit is written up, with F-Gas records wherever refrigerant work is involved, so you can show what was done and when.
Safe owner checks
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
Why deal with it now?
Fans and portables move warm air around rather than removing it. A fixed system removes the heat to the outside, runs more quietly in the room and can typically heat as well, so it earns its keep all year.
Comparing quotes
- What’s in the price and what isn’t
- What paperwork you will receive afterwards
- What happens if the job turns out to be different on the day
- Whose warranty applies, and on what terms
When it’s something else
We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work can’t put right:
- Work that needs permission from a landlord or the council
- Stuffy rooms that need fresh air rather than cooling
- Gas boiler or central heating faults (we do not work on gas boilers)
ME6: your questions answered
Can air conditioning heat my home as well?
Normally, yes. Running as a heat pump, it moves heat in from outside rather than making it from electricity alone. To replace your main heating, there are extra conditions, including for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps.
Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?
The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That’s the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.
How long will the installation take?
Most single-room systems take a day. Multi-room and ducted systems take longer, depending on the pipe routes and access and the quote says how long to expect.
Is planning permission needed for the outdoor unit?
Sometimes. Heat pumps and cooling-only units are treated differently, and so are flats, listed buildings and conservation areas. We point out anything that may need permission at the survey, and the council has the final say. This is general information, not legal advice.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what’s needed, where things go and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
Will you need to do electrical work?
Usually, yes. We check your consumer unit on the survey and include any electrical work on the quote, and our NICEIC approval covers the installation and certificate.
What size air conditioning unit do I need?
Sizing is done on the survey, room by room. Too small, and it runs flat out; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy, so we explain why we have chosen a particular output.
