Air source heat pumps in The Mint

How we handle air source heat pumps in The Mint

As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in The Mint and the rest of Hampshire. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We’ll explain which type fits your home and why. We’re often asked to deal with working out where a cylinder could go and checking whether planning permission is needed, on air-to-water heat pumps, radiator systems and underfloor heating.

Homes around The Mint typically have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: what was done, the refrigerant type and any amount added or recovered. File them with the system’s paperwork, ready for the next service or a warranty query.

Why act early in The Mint

The 0% VAT rate on heat pumps in homes runs until 31 March 2027, then 5% applies. It’s a date to bear in mind when planning alongside your own plans for the property. Small faults tend to grow, so it’s worth dealing with them early.

Typical ranges are on our prices page, but your price depends on the job in front of us. For a fixed-price quote, phone us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line, and we will talk you through it.

The Mint questions

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in The Mint?

The Mint is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Do you cover smaller places like The Mint?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Do you work on systems someone else installed?

Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we’ll tell you what to do first.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

A typical installation takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. We plan the work so you are without heating for as little time as possible and agreed before we start.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. From one rented home to commercial buildings, we work the same way: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.

Is a heat pump permitted development?

That depends on your home and the unit’s position. Flats have different limits, conservation areas have extra conditions, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights, so we check during the survey.

How the visit works

Everything the job needs comes with us, from tools and test equipment to ladders and dust sheets. You only need to give us clear access to the units, or their planned positions, and to the fuse board. The visit takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Visits to The Mint are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. You tell us about the home and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
  3. We explain which type of heat pump suits the home and whether a grant could apply.
  4. We install the heat pump and connect it up.
  5. We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
  • Let us know where we can park and unload
  • Keep pets out of the rooms we’re working in

Getting a price

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, the quote is fixed before anything goes ahead.

What air conditioning will not do

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Disconnecting or servicing a gas boiler
  • Improving the building’s insulation
  • Tax advice on your own circumstances

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 and we’ll say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Underfloor heating
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Radiator systems
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Air-to-water heat pumps

After we have gone

Looking after the system is mostly common sense. A few tips:

  • Leave space around the outdoor unit
  • Keep the MCS certificate with the manufacturer’s paperwork
  • Book a yearly service

We show you how to use the controls and explain how a heat pump works differently from a boiler. Steady running suits a heat pump better than switching on and off, and we’ll explain the settings for your home.

Heat pumps prefer steady, low-temperature running as explained at handover.

Homes in The Mint and heat pumps

Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 4 within half a mile of the centre, such as Ciddy Hall (grade II). For a heat pump, permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with the local planning authority (normally East Hampshire council) where needed. The 2021 Census found about 71% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

Older homes near Hope Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. For a home near Liss station, the survey looks at whether an air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump suits better.
