Air source heat pumps in Sulhamstead
Air-to-water heat pumps heat your hot water through a cylinder. Homes with a combi boiler may not have a cylinder, so finding space for one is part of the survey. Air-to-air systems do not heat hot water, so you’ll need another way to do that. The work covers hot water cylinders, air-to-water heat pumps and underfloor heating, and common reasons people get in touch are comparing heat pump types and working out whether radiators need upsizing.
Older and listed homes in villages like Sulhamstead need extra care, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so we check consent first.
We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

What happens on the day
Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. So on the day, you don’t need a separate electrician for the electrical side. On site, it takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We agree a date with you and plan the visit to Sulhamstead so we arrive with what’s needed.
- You tell us about the home and what you want from a heat pump.
- The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
- You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
- Installation follows on the agreed dates.
- After commissioning, you get the MCS certificate and a handover.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas
- Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
- Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it

Advice
FAQs for Sulhamstead
Is Sulhamstead within the area you cover?
Yes. Sulhamstead is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.
Can I fit a heat pump in Sulhamstead without planning permission?
There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. Around 15 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central Sulhamstead. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at West Berkshire council, normally the authority for Sulhamstead first.
Am I eligible for a heat pump grant?
Not every home qualifies, so we check. Only one grant is available per property, it can’t replace a low-carbon system, and hybrids do not qualify and other conditions apply.
How much time does a heat pump install need?
It takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. The cylinder, the radiators and the pipework make the biggest difference, and we confirm the timing with your quote.
What does F-Gas certified mean?
Certification shows a business is approved to work on systems that hold F gas refrigerant. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and we hold it.
What warranty do I get?
It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.
How do you keep the place clean during the work?
We start with protection: dust sheets over floors and anything close to the work. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards before we leave.
What air source heat pumps cannot fix
We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what air source heat pumps won’t do:
- Promising eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
- Improving the building’s insulation
- Getting planning permission or listed building consent on your behalf
Not sure which it is? You can call us on 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly.
Where we work
- Underfloor heating
- Air-to-water heat pumps
- Radiator systems
- Air-to-air heat pumps
- Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
- Hot water cylinders
Rented and managed buildings
The F-gas rules share responsibility for leak checking between the equipment’s operator and the service technicians. In a let or managed building, it’s worth agreeing who that operator is and we are happy to deal with whoever it is.
Larger air conditioning systems in buildings need more than servicing: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We can arrange it, prepare the system for it and fix what it finds.
Air source heat pumps around Sulhamstead
Sulhamstead is about 43 miles from central London, well within the area we cover from our base in East Grinstead.
Older homes near Church of St Peter may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler.

What affects the cost of air source heat pumps
The survey or diagnosis tells us what the work involves. We look at:
- The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
- What we find on the survey or diagnosis
- The brand, model and parts involved
What you pay depends on the type of system and how many units are involved, the access and the parts and time the job needs. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.
What we need to know
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it
- Where the property is and what kind of building it is
- Your consumer unit or fuse board
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from photos and measurements. Then you get a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.
