Air source heat pumps for Stock

Stock: your questions answered

Will a heat pump in Stock need planning permission?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Central Stock is a short walk from the Stock Conservation Area. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the planning department at Chelmsford council, usually the authority for Stock.

Do you cover smaller places like Stock?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. For anything urgent, such as a system failing in a server room or water leaking from a unit, ring our 24/7 line and we’ll tell you what to do first.

Why use an F-Gas certified company?

For refrigerant work, both the engineer and the company need the right F-gas credentials. It’s worth checking before booking and we’ll gladly show you ours.

How much VAT is charged on a heat pump in a home?

For homes, 0% until 31 March 2027, under HMRC Notice 708/6, then 5%. With air-to-air, HMRC’s view depends on the product, so we confirm the VAT on the quote.

Will my home qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

Possibly. The scheme runs in England and Wales and pays £7,500 towards an eligible air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 for an air-to-air system that meets stricter conditions. Homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas can get an extra £1,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump until March 2027. The survey is where we check your home against them.

Do I get paperwork after the visit?

Yes. Each visit is written up, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. File them with the system’s paperwork.

Air source heat pumps in Stock

Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler doesn’t qualify. If the problem is checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and questions about where the outdoor unit can go, we can help.

Older and listed homes in villages like Stock need extra care, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so we check consent first.

For a fault on a system that may still be under warranty, send us the make, model and installation date. We’ll tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before anything chargeable is done.

When it’s something else

Not every problem is solved by air source heat pumps, and we will tell you before any work starts. It will not put right:

  • Disconnecting or servicing a gas boiler
  • Tax advice on your own circumstances
  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades

If you’re not sure, just ring us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Radiator systems
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Underfloor heating
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Air-to-air heat pumps

Aftercare tips

After the visit, a few habits help:

  • File the MCS certificate safely
  • Keep up with insulation and draught-proofing
  • Keep to regular servicing

In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. It may give off steam or sound different for a few minutes, and that’s normal.

Leave space around the outdoor unit. Airflow is what it runs on, so keep it clear all year.

What affects the quote in Stock

Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • Whether we need access equipment for high-level work
  • The equipment or parts the job needs
  • One-off work versus a regular service cycle

No two properties are the same, so we price each one individually. The equipment, how we reach it, the route between units and the work needed all make a difference.

What to send for a quote

Good pictures often save a visit. Try to include:

  • The outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits or would go
  • Your installation or service records
  • Wide pictures of the room or the existing unit

Every quote starts with a look at the job, either on a site survey or, for simple jobs, from your photos and details. After that, we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.

Air source heat pumps around Stock

About 31% of homes in and around Stock have been built since 2000, according to VOA council tax data, and about 77% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Lower heat loss in recent homes often means a smaller heat pump and fewer radiator changes. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

With Ingatestone Hall about 2.5 miles west, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of All Saints, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

What happens on the day

Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. So on the day, you do not need a separate electrician for the electrical side. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Photos of the existing unit help with repairs and servicing in Stock.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
  3. We explain which type of heat pump suits the home and whether a grant could apply.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
