Air source heat pumps across Steeple Claydon

Steeple Claydon: your questions answered

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Steeple Claydon?

It depends on the property. Historic England lists about 19 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Steeple Claydon. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with Buckinghamshire council, which is typically the planning authority for Steeple Claydon.

Is the heat pump grant available in Steeple Claydon?

Steeple Claydon is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

What’s the price of a heat pump installation?

For air-to-water, the price is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) before any grant. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £7,500 to eligible homes in England and Wales, and we confirm eligibility before you commit.

Do you look at the job first?

Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey shows what’s needed, where things go and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.

Do you work in Steeple Claydon?

Yes. Our engineers work in Steeple Claydon, within the South East and London area we cover. Our base is in East Grinstead, West Sussex.

Is the equipment covered by a warranty?

It’s the manufacturer’s, and the terms are theirs. Some terms depend on regular servicing by a qualified engineer so it’s worth keeping the service records.

What accreditations do you have?

F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps, and we are Checkatrade members. Engineers who handle refrigerant hold their own F-gas qualifications as well.

Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Steeple Claydon

For an air-to-water heat pump, the price is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can provide £7,500 towards an eligible air-to-water system in England and Wales, and as the installer we apply for it on your behalf. Eligibility depends on the property, so we confirm it before anything is agreed. Common call-outs are for no space for a hot water cylinder and working out whether radiators need upsizing, on underfloor heating, air-to-air heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps.

Older homes around Steeple Claydon can be draughty or have solid walls, so a proper heat loss calculation matters. Sometimes insulating first makes more sense.

Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details for an installation, a fault and repair note for a repair, or a record of the service. File it with the manual so it’s to hand next time.

Owner checks or an engineer?

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrics need care too. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

Air source heat pumps in Steeple Claydon: the local picture

About 32% of homes in Steeple Claydon and the neighbourhoods around it have been built since 2000, according to VOA council tax data, and the 2021 Census found about 79% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Newer homes usually lose less heat, which tends to suit a heat pump well. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

Older homes near Church of St Michael may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. Claydon House lies about 1.6 miles south-east. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.

How it works

You don’t need to do much on the day. Just let us in and point us to the units, or to where they’ll be fitted, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and we explain what we have done. Getting to the outside of the property matters more than parking in a place like Steeple Claydon.

  1. First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you are hoping for.
  2. On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
  5. Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.

How to prepare

  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working
  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it

What air conditioning won’t do

Not every problem is solved by air source heat pumps, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:

  • Planning decisions, which rest with the council
  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems

If in doubt, phone us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we will say what we think before you book.

For landlords and property managers

Portfolio owners often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of properties can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

Facilities teams in offices, schools and public buildings book us too across Buckinghamshire. Larger buildings can be done in stages around the people who use them.

What a customer said

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
