Air source heat pumps in St Ibbs, done properly
Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. We are often asked to deal with plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and radiators that may be too small for a heat pump, across hot water cylinders, radiator systems and air-to-water heat pumps.
Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near St Ibbs, so the design focuses on heat loss and radiators.
Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler and it’s worth keeping safe.

What happens on the day
Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. On the day, both are in the same hands. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. A note on how to find the property and where to park makes a visit to St Ibbs easier.
- We start with your plans and the property.
- The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
- We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
- The system is installed and connected to the controls.
- We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets and children away from the work area
- Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
- Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
Getting a price
The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Tell us the address and what you need, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.
Advice
What a heat pump looks like in St Ibbs
VOA council tax data date about 43% of homes in St Ibbs and the neighbourhoods around it to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and the 2021 Census found about 61% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these. Draw a one-mile circle round the middle of St Ibbs and it takes in 2 conservation areas. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 20 within half a mile of the centre, such as Church of St Ippolyts (church of England) (grade I). That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with the planning team at North Hertfordshire council, which typically handles St Ibbs.
Period properties close to Church of St Ippolyts (church of England) can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

Fixed-price quotes for air source heat pumps in St Ibbs
The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:
- The size of the job
- Whether it’s a simple split or a larger system
- The equipment or parts the job needs
The cost depends on the system and the number of rooms or units, the access and the parts and time the job needs. We give you a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.
Before you get in touch
To speed up the quote, please include:
- A few pictures of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
- The paperwork from the last service, if you have it
- The outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits or would go
To help us quote: the address and the type of property, a few photos, the make and model of any existing system and any symptoms, from error codes to drips. Once you have those, ring us on 07833 053749 or email us.
Signs you need air source heat pumps in St Ibbs
Many people look at heat pumps when an oil, LPG or gas boiler is getting old. Starting early leaves time for the survey, the design and any grant application, rather than rushing a replacement in winter.
Most people get in touch when they notice something like this:
- A boiler that’s getting old
- Wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating
- Deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home
With Knebworth House about 4.1 miles south-east, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

St Ibbs questions
Is St Ibbs within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.
Is the heat pump grant available in St Ibbs?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including St Ibbs, if they qualify. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.
Does servicing affect my warranty?
For some brands, yes. Send us the make and model and we’ll tell you what the manufacturer expects, and book the service at the interval they recommend.
Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?
We find out during the survey. Where a radiator is already large enough, it stays and any changes are in the quote.
Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That is the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We are happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.
Why use an F-Gas certified company?
The law says any company working on equipment containing F gas has to be certified, and the engineers need their own qualifications. It’s how you know the refrigerant is being handled legally and safely.
