How we handle air source heat pumps in Southbourne

Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. Air-to-air systems do not heat hot water, so you’ll need another way to do that. Typical jobs include no space for a hot water cylinder and checking whether planning permission is needed, on radiator systems, air-to-water heat pumps and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas.

Cottages and older homes near Southbourne can lose heat faster, so a proper heat loss calculation matters. Sometimes insulation first is the better investment.

If a fault appears while the equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty, tell us the make, model and installation date. We will tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before anything chargeable is done.

What happens if it’s left?

Planning rules have specific conditions. Checking the position for your home at the survey stage avoids surprises later, including conservation areas, listed buildings and Article 4 directions. A system that’s left with a fault, or without a service, normally costs more to run.

One room or a whole building, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the equipment. The price is fixed before any work starts, with VAT shown clearly.

Owner checks or an engineer?

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are usually the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrics need care too. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

How the visit works

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with sheets down and mess cleared as we go. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. The visit takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Everything the job in Southbourne needs is worked out beforehand.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. We measure heat loss for every room.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets out of the rooms we’re working in
  • Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go
  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow

Getting a quote

Here’s what helps us quote: the address and the type of property, pictures of the rooms or units, the make and model of any existing system and anything you’ve noticed, such as an error code or a noise. Once you have those, call 07833 053749 or send an email.

What affects the quote in Southbourne

Our prices page gives typical ranges, but every job is priced on its own. The quote depends on:

  • Which make and model is being fitted or worked on
  • How easy the units are to reach
  • What state the existing equipment is in

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Faults and wear in a system tend to grow, and a struggling system uses more electricity to do less. If you’re not sure what’s needed, phone us on 07833 053749 or email us for straight advice and a fixed price.

Helping us quote

To speed up the quote, please include:

  • Any previous service or F-Gas records
  • Photos showing the indoor unit and the space around it
  • The rating plate or label on any existing unit

Every quote starts with a look at the job, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from pictures and measurements. Then you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Questions from Southbourne

Can I fit a heat pump in Southbourne without planning permission?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. Around 18 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central Southbourne. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at Chichester council, usually the authority for Southbourne first.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Southbourne?

Southbourne is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Do you cover Southbourne?

Yes. Southbourne is part of the area we cover, within the South East and London area we cover. We’re based in East Grinstead, West Sussex.

Why use an F-Gas certified company?

The law says any company working on equipment containing F gas has to be certified, and each engineer needs the right qualifications too. It’s how you know the refrigerant is being handled legally and safely.

How does the warranty work?

The manufacturer provides it, on its own terms. Some terms depend on regular servicing by a qualified engineer so it’s worth keeping the service records.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for breakdowns that can’t wait. Call 07833 053749 and tell us what’s happened.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

It takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. The cylinder, the radiators and the pipework make the biggest difference and the timing is set out with your quote.

What a heat pump looks like in Southbourne

The coast is only about 1 mile from Southbourne. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. About 73% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

If you live near Southbourne station, the survey compares air-to-water and air-to-air for your home before anything is quoted. Warblington Castle, roughly 2.5 miles west, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings.
