When it’s something else

Not every problem is solved by air source heat pumps, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:

  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Formal advice on VAT for your situation

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we’ll say what we think before booking.

About our air source heat pumps in Portfield

Air-to-water heat pumps heat your hot water through a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. With air-to-air, hot water has to come from something else. If the problem is questions about where the outdoor unit can go and choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air, we can sort it out.

For a house near Portfield, space outside is rarely the problem, so the main questions are heat loss, radiators and the electrics.

Warranty on the equipment is the manufacturer’s own, on the manufacturer’s terms, and we set them out on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, and we’re happy to talk you through them.

What owners can safely do

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.

Heat pumps in Portfield: local notes

Portfield is about 54 miles from central London, well within the area we cover from our base in East Grinstead.

If your home is listed, like Goodwood House about 2.5 miles north, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work. If your home is one of the older properties near St George's, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

Portfield is about 1 mile east of Chichester, in West Sussex. Homes and businesses alike in Portfield, we can help with air source heat pumps. You’ll hear back from us the same working day and our emergency line runs 24/7. Portfield is one of 371 towns, villages and districts in West Sussex where we work. What we do, step by step

Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. On the day, both are in the same hands. The work takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. We plan the visit to Portfield from the survey or your photos.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. We measure heat loss for every room.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

Preparing for the visit

  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Keep pets and children away from the work area
  • Clear access to the fuse board

How to get a quote

VAT is set out clearly on every quote, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. Homes, businesses and different kinds of work can be treated differently for VAT, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. For landlords and property managers

Whether it’s one property or many, the approach is the same: a look at the job first, a fixed-price quote, work booked with the occupier and written records afterwards.

For anyone managing more than one building, we can plan visits across the portfolio and price them together. Each property gets its own records, so the files stay tidy.

Questions from Portfield

Is a heat pump in Portfield permitted development?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Around 53 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central Portfield. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the local planning authority (for Portfield, typically Chichester council).

Do you cover smaller places like Portfield?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Which manufacturers do you install and repair?

We install and work on the leading makes, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Tell us the make and model and we will take it from there.

Will my home qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

It depends on your home and the system. In England and Wales, the scheme offers £7,500 towards an eligible air-to-water or ground source heat pump, and £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump only in limited cases, and we check before you commit.

Do you look at the job first?

Yes. For simple jobs, photos and a few details can be enough, while bigger systems and repairs that need testing get a visit.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

A typical installation takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. The programme is planned to keep time without heating short, and we explain it in advance.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That’s a legal requirement, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.

From one of our customers

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
