Air source heat pumps near Red Rice

What owners can safely do

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Write down what you notice: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.

About our air source heat pumps in Red Rice

A £2,500 grant is available for some air-to-air heat pumps, with conditions. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home, so an add-on next to a boiler is not eligible. We’re often asked to deal with moving away from fossil-fuel heating and not knowing whether a grant applies, across underfloor heating, hot water cylinders and air-to-air heat pumps.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Red Rice, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, ready for the next service or a warranty query.

How the visit works

The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. After that, it takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to Red Rice.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
  3. We explain which type of heat pump suits the home and whether a grant could apply.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go
  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Mention any parking restrictions near the property

Advice

What the work involves, system by system

Radiators and underfloor heating

Underfloor heating suits a heat pump’s lower flow temperature and we look at it during the survey.

Air-to-air heat pumps

An air-to-air system heats rooms directly and can also provide cooling. Hot water needs a separate source so you’ll need another way to heat it.

Honest limits

Not every problem is solved by air source heat pumps, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:

  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
  • Insulation work, such as loft or cavity wall insulation
  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

If in doubt, give us a ring on 07833 053749 or email us and we will say what we think before booking.

What the work covers

  • Hot water cylinders
  • Air-to-air heat pumps

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Red Rice

Is Red Rice within the area you cover?

Yes. Red Rice is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.

Can you do air source heat pumps in Red Rice?

Yes. We work across London and the South East from our base in East Grinstead, and Red Rice is part of that. Tell us a little about the job and we’ll take it from there.

Is there a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?

There is a £2,500 grant for air-to-air, but only under strict conditions. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating, meet the home’s full heating demand, be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Every visit is recorded and F-Gas records kept where they apply.

How does the warranty work?

Warranty is the manufacturer’s own, on its terms. Each brand sets its own conditions and periods, so we explain them on your quote.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

Which accreditations do you hold?

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We’re also Checkatrade members.
