Air source heat pumps in Ramsey

Air source heat pumps in Ramsey, done properly

Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit cannot be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. We are often asked to deal with checking whether planning permission is needed and working out where a cylinder could go, across air-to-water heat pumps, hot water cylinders and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas.

If your home in or near Ramsey is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027.

Warranty on the equipment is the manufacturer’s own, on the manufacturer’s terms, and we set them out on your quote. Terms differ from brand to brand, so we go through them with you rather than leave you to find the small print.

Looking after your system

So the system stays in good health:

  • Do not block radiators or indoor units with furniture
  • Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you
  • Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often

Now and then in cold weather, the outdoor unit defrosts itself. It may give off steam or sound different for a few minutes and it’s part of how the system works.

Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off, using the settings agreed at handover.

Questions from Ramsey

Is the heat pump grant available in Ramsey?

Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Ramsey is in England, where it applies. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Is a heat pump in Ramsey permitted development?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. Central Ramsey is a short walk from the Ramsey Conservation Area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at Tendring council, typically the authority for Ramsey first.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we will propose a schedule and quote for it. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

Should I choose air-to-water or air-to-air?

Air-to-water suits homes with radiators and a cylinder; air-to-air suits rooms that need heating and cooling. The survey helps decide. Both are part of what we install.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Yes, day and night. Call the emergency line and tell us the make, the symptoms and any error code, and we’ll talk you through the next steps.

For landlords and property managers

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the property, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed-price quote.

Records are where property maintenance often slips. Every visit is written up, plus the F-Gas records where refrigerant is involved, so you can show what was done and when.

What happens on the day

Everything the job needs comes with us, from tools and test equipment to ladders and dust sheets. You only need to give us clear access to the units, or their planned positions, and to the fuse board. On site, the work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in Ramsey.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. We measure heat loss for every room.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
  • Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area

Getting a price

Some jobs can be priced from photos, while others need a survey. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before anything goes ahead.

What affects the quote in Ramsey

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Whether the existing supply is suitable
  • What we find on the survey or diagnosis

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Faults and wear in a system tend to grow, and a system working harder than it should costs more to run. If you are not sure what’s needed, call 07833 053749 or drop us a line for straight advice and a fixed price.

What to send for a quote

Good pictures often save a visit. The most useful are:

  • Photos showing the indoor unit and the space around it
  • The rating plate or label on any existing unit
  • Any previous service or F-Gas records

Quotes do not take long. Call or email with a few details and we will come back to you the same working day. If we need to see the property first, we book a survey at a time that works for you.

What a heat pump looks like in Ramsey

Ramsey is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. The 2021 Census found about 82% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses normally have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

Older homes near Parish Church of St Michael may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs.
